If you like a good historical tale which involves the supernatural, then both Bakumatsu and Hakuouki are great choices. They are set in the same time period, and both tell alternate versions of history which involve the presence of supernatural forces in one form or another, with plenty of swordplay to delight.

What she doesn’t count on, however, is being asked to become a concubine to the recluse Emperor and help him transform into a better leader. What’s more, the Emperor shows little intelligence, seems to have no interest in ruling, and is rumored to prefer men. One thing’s for certain: Shuurei has her work cut out for her!

Both Hakuouki and Saiunkoku are stories about strong female characters who are surrounded by various male characters who are historical figures. They take place in two totally different time periods, but both protagonists similarly encourage and assist the characters around them. Saiunkoku is lighter and has more romance, but I think Hakuouki fans would enjoy it nonetheless.

Both take place in historical Japan. Both involve supernatural mosters. Both "monsters" dislike sunlight.

Main characters in both animes are virtuous and likeable warriors, who fight for freedom. Arslan Senki and Hakuouki Hekketsuroku ephasize the importance and beauty of friendship.

These anime have the following key aspects in common:

1. Both set in feudal Japan

2. Both have a central samurai theme (sword fights, samurai skills, war etc.)

3. Both feature nightmarish, superhuman enemies

4. Both feature a samurai struggling with his identity and past

While Rurouni Kenshin features more humour elements, the themes common to both are very strong.

Although Hakuouki has a special place in my heart that is irreplaceable, Amnesia can get you back from the tears and more into the romance side of things. Amnesia is also a reverse harem and full of romance. Although not as serious or tragic, the plotline begins to get intriguing as the series progresses. Don't expect this anime to be alike, but if you like the romance and wished to see more, Amnesia is the series for you.

So the guy MC look and act very similar, although this is a Chinese anime. The girl MC is transported to a world of bandits and the guy MC is not trusting or as kind to her at first, similar to the start of this anime, however, this is A LOT happier, funnier and lighter, after watching season 2 Hakuoki and crying your eyes out, let this anime heal you lol.
