Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

The war between the monarchical Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance has raged ceaselessly across the galaxy for over a century, with the fleets of both powers having fought countless battles. Currently the conflict revolves around the strategic Iserlohn Corridor, one of only two passages of space through which the two forces can access each other. Here the Empire has built the nigh-impregnable Iserlohn Fortress, whose deadly weaponry has thwarted repeated efforts by the Alliance to capture her. Phezzan, a neutral mercantile state, controls the other corridor. The long war has resulted in an indecisive stalemate, but there are two men from the two worlds who will change everything: Wen-Li Yang, a gifted strategist from the Alliance who wants nothing more than to retire and be a historian; and Reinhard von Lohengramm, a man from the Empire whose ambition knows no bounds. Their loves, struggles, triumphs and failures play across an interstellar stage of intrigue, war and death.

On the surface it would seem that a show like Gungrave, which is based on a Playstation 2 Game would have nothing in common with a show like Legend of Galactic Heroes, which is based off a series of science fiction novels. Upon closer inspection the viewer will find some common elements in each show that are both shows strengths. Those similar elements are the devoted friendships between the main characters, the character development, the epic story telling, the appropriately chosen music in each series, and the believability of the characters behaviors. Since I have listed so many things that both shows have in common I feel it would take several, long paragraphs to accurately explain all those similar elements so I’ll briefly focus on the first which is the devoted friendships between the main characters. In Gungrave Harry McDowell and his childhood friend Brandon Heat struggled together in the slums of the violent Billon City risking life and limb for one another. So when Harry makes the decision to join the Millennium Crime Syndicate to gain the sort of power and freedom he’s never known naturally Brandon does so as well giving so much of himself to aide his friend. In Legend of Galactic Heroes, Reinhard Von Musel and his childhood friend Siegfried Kircheis enjoyed some happy times together. So when Reinhard enlists in the military of the Galactic empire and invites is best friend to join him to gain the power and freedom he’s never known naturally Siegfried joins him giving so much of himself to aide his friend.

Both Noir and Gungrave have a strong story about friendship and devotion. The plots are worked out somewhat differently, but both anime are about assassination and involve great action.

Both of these anime are dark, depressing, and morbid, with a well-developed plot and a strong, coherent story arc. Blue Gender is more sci-fi, where Gungrave is more of an alternate present; but while both are quite dramatic, don't expect to walk away from either one with a smile on your face.

Gankutsuou and Gungrave have a strong plot about friendship and betrayal. Both keep things serious and don't offer a lot of action or comedy. I definitely feel that these appeal to the same audience.

Both have a very strong plot and a very skilled assassin as the main character. It is hard not to link these two anime. Gungrave has a bit more character development though and a different drawing style.
