Gainax just cranks out those ecchi comedies. Gunbuster 2 and Re: Cutie Honey both have spastic visuals very much inspired by a retro style. That only touches upon the surface of their similarities. Both follow the same recipie that calls for a ditsy, lovey dovey heart obsessed main character who meets a cold and calculating woman. The two develop a borderline romantic relationship as the main character melts her counterpart's icy heart, all while saving the world.
If you are like me and watched movie version of Gunbuster 2 and really enjoyed it from start to the end, when I recommend you yo watch anime movie Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection and wise versa. Although Yamato: Resurrection doesn't have that Gunbuster "charm" and is takes more serious approach both anime is about mankind survival and saving our mother Earth. Also both anime sometimes have that over the top feeling ,but I am not saying that is bad thing that what makes those anime both so great and interesting to watch.
