Synopsis:

Tarou has dreams - distressing dreams, related to the trauma he suffered as a child. His dreams and visions disturb his ease of mind, constantly reminding him of the darkness of his fear at the time he lost his sister all those years ago. He relives the fear, but can't recall any of the details of the time. Now, a new transfer student, Masayuki, takes an interest in Tarou's troubled past, as well as their school mate Makoto's connection to the dark incident. Under his persistence, the three boys end up visiting the site where Tarou was held hostage as a child: a decrepit hospital beyond the dam. The three venture forward to face their pasts and fears, unsuspecting of the bizarre world they are about to enter...

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Maebara Keiichi, an ordinary high-school boy, has transferred to a new school in Hinamizawa, a small rural village. At the outset everything seems peaceful and Keiichi becomes friends with a nice group of schoolgirls with whom he spends many idle summer afternoons. Suddenly violence encroaches upon the blissful peace of the village and Keiichi becomes entangled in an endless cycle of fear and death. The inconsistent, but inevitable horrors of Hinamizawa are told and retold becoming an endless and inescapable nightmare of insanity. Will it end even if the mystery of Hinamizawa is solved?

They are both in a little town no one knows about, there is a mystery from the past in both. There are also things like kidnapping a child in both.

Hitsuji no Uta

Hitsuji no Uta

Kazuna is a young man with a fairly normal life. He attends high school, lives with his surrogate family, and models for his somber love-interest Yaegashi's paintings. But recently, he has suffered several crippling attacks at the sight of blood -- attacks which leave him incapacitated and out of control. Kazuna must now reunite with his sister who he has not seen in years, and discover the truth behind his family name and vampiric genes, before his bloodthirsty desires destroy himself, or others close to him.

In both anime we have a young guy at the center of the story even if in Ghost Hound there are three guys who has something in their past. Kazuna in Hitsuji no Uta would like to know more of his past, about a tragic event happened - just like Tarou.

Storytelling is quite in the same pace, slow, quiet with lots of pauses.

School-feeling is really on - hour-bells,  classrooms, courses - making it feel closer to present's students' weekdays.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion

In the future, a devastating event known as Second Impact has destroyed Tokyo as we know it, giving rise to Tokyo III - a city under siege by mysterious lifeforms known only as Angels. Mankind's only line of defense are the Evangelions, a set man-made machines piloted by a trio of fourteen year-old teenagers, Rei, Shinji, and Asuka. The fate of Japan and the entire world now lie with these three children, though they might not have the power to save the most important thing of all: each other.

Both Ghost Hound and Eva concern themselves with exploring the psychological side of life. Both shows take a look at the psyches of damaged individuals. In Eva it was a thread in the larger plot, while in Ghost Hound this exploration is the plot. Due to the psychological aspects and twisting plots of both shows it is likely fans of either one will like the other as well.

Noein

Noein

When Haruka, Yuu and their friends decided to go ghost hunting, they had no idea the "ghosts" they'd find would turn their lives upside down. Black-clad and wielding quantum powers, these knights from the future are after an artifact of immense power that they hope will save their dimension from destruction: the Dragon Torque; and Haruka seems to be the key. As factions within the knights violently disagree on how to proceed, Haruka and the gang are caught up in a fight with the Shangri La, in an existential battle where fates of entire universes are decided.

Similar atmosphere and the fact that there are scientific explanations for complicated real life or paranormal phenomena makes both anime great. In the case of Noein its the concept of the parallel worlds and the tree of probabilities. On the other hand in Ghost Hound its the explanation of paranormal phenomena.

Sci-fi Harry

Sci-fi Harry

Harry MacQuinn is a teenage loner. He's frightened of confrontation, is extremely awkward, is all but invisible at his school, and has no self-confidence; but there's one thing that makes him unique: Harry has telekinetic powers. After he haphazardly saves Catherine - a girl he has a crush on - from attackers, he unwittingly reveals his powers to her. And after his powers are seen on video, events unfold that bring to light an interest in Harry from a secretive organization, attention from the local police, and the most dangerous aspect of Harry's ability: every time he uses his powers, someone near him dies.

Both shows are quite dark-themed, even if they don't go all the road down to a full horror show.

The investigative and the "neurosci-fi" parts are other points in common among the two series.
