Professor Saotome is finishing up his lifelong Getter project: a series of space exploration ships powered by Getter rays from the sun. These ships are able to combine into three different robot forms called Getter Robo. At the same time, King Gora of the underground Dinosaur Empire has completed his mechasaurus project and begins his plans for world domination! Can Getter Robo’s pilots Ryoma, Hayato and Musashi defend the earth from the forces of the Dinosaur Empire, even with the help of the lovely Michiru from the Command Ship?
On a solitary island in the middle of a vast unknown ocean, Dr. Hell, a deranged genius, plans the final stage of his plan for world domination: the activation of his Mecha Beast Army. The only man aware of Dr. Hell's plan is Dr. Kabuto, a pioneer in new energy sources. In a desperate attempt to stop Dr. Hell before his death, Kabuto uses his research and resources to construct a weapon powerful enough to match that of the Mecha Beast Army, which he entrusts to his grandson, Kouji Kabuto. That weapon is the Super Robot Mazinger Z!
Super robot of the 70s, one shouldn't need to tell anything else if you were a children back in the days.
If you missed it for any reason (including being born after the golden age of the super robot genre), there you have the basis of your animefanhood :)!!!
Getter Robo and Mazinger Z are both old school giant robot series. Attacks with silly names, a different giant villian to defeat each week, super science and saving the world!
I would be shocked if you did not like one if there, if you already enjoyed the other.
Both are creations of Go Nagai and are both incredible Super Robot series from the old school era!
Kappei is your normal run of the mill delinquent lad, riding motorcycles and trying to gain leadership of a gang. When fighting with a rival, they are both attacked by a strange creature! Fleeing to his Grandfather's nearby sea rig, Kappei is knocked into the water and is rescued by a giant spaceship piloted by his grandparents. Before he can figure out what is going on, he finds himself in the mighty Zam-bird, fighting against the monster that attacked him - a mecha-boost of the planet-destroying Gaizok! Kappei isn't the only one in his family who ends up with a giant robot, though; his cousin Uchuta pilots the Zambull and Keiko pilots the Zambase. Together, the three of them can transform into the Invincible Superman Zambot 3!
Getter Robo and Invincible Superman Zanbot 3 are both examples of the '70s era mecha series, where names are long and epic, all robots seem to combine and transform, and a group of stalwart kids must defeat some recently awakened evil that threatens to consume the planet. Constantly challenged by increasingly difficult foes, the heroes in each grow along with them.
If you recall either one of these, and wish for some nostalgic value, or simply enjoy old mecha series, you should take a look at the other series.

Five years ago, the young Daiya Tsuwabuki and his father were involved in an accident that destroyed their ship and caused Daiya’s father to disappear. Though Daiya claimed that the accident was the result of an attack by giant monsters, he was ridiculed for his belief. Now, in the present, the same monsters have emerged and attack Daiya’s home island; and when Daiya single-handedly faces them, he runs across a flying dragon-shaped battleship named Daiku-Maryu and joins its crew as the pilot of the super robot Gaiking. Along with the Daiku-Maryu, Daiya sets forth to the inner hidden world of Darius to find his father, and put a stop to the Darius Emperor’s evil schemes.
Both of these robo series have similar storylines. Both have robots, and both have people who must defend the earth from animal-like robot invaders from the center of the earth.
While searching for an unknown menace, a submarine is attacked by a giant sea monster! Getter Robo G is dispatched, but has little effect. The monster, a dragonsaurus from prehistoric times, is also attacking oil tankers. The Japanese Government assembles a Super Robot Army of Getter Robo G, Great Mazinger, Grendizer and Double Spazzer to fight the dragonsaurus, but things take a further turn for the worse when comrade in arms Boss Borot gets himself swallowed by the beast. Can even the combined might of the Super Robot Army free Boss Borot and defeat the dragonsaurus before it reaches Japan?

The year is 2025. Fifty years ago, Queen Himika and the evil Jama Empire attacked mankind; Kyushu, Japan, was their battleground. Ultimately an event caused fog to surround Kyushu, effectively cutting it off from the rest of Japan; and the mainland has lost contact with it ever since. In the present, students like the motorcycle-loving Kenji Kusanagi have little knowledge of these events, except what they learn in history books. However, when Himika and her Phantom Gods appear once more, Kenji finds himself in the middle of the battle - and a cockpit. Now, as the pilot of the mecha Jeeg, Kenji and a few unlikely classmates must battle the forces of evil and save the world!
Kotetsushin Jeeg reminds me of a combination of Getter Robo and Mazinger Z (with good reason given they are all the brainchild of Go Nagai). Cross Mazinger's moves and general look with Getter Robo's transforming and support vehicle. Combine the main characters to a degree, as well as their enemies, and poof, Jeeg!
Kotetsushin Jeeg is a more modern edition, and not quite as hokey as the old mecha series are. If you have fond memories of Getter Robo I recommend giving a the more modern, yet still similar Kotetsushin Jeeg a try.
