If you liked the Genshiken anime, the Anime-Planet community thinks you'd like:
At Rikkyouin High School, the freshmen are divided into groups based upon lots that are drawn in a lottery, after which they must compete against in other in a series of contests. Whether it’s cooking, hardball, swimming or exorcisms, the challenges they face will determine which group will become the next year’s student council. All the while, the current student council president is busy defending her life against assassination attempts! There’s never a dull day at Rikkyouin High School!
This is the one that you see on the TV sets in the background. The guys favorite and the source of Saki's misery and humiliation. Bad quality, but worth a look if you're curious.
Kujibiki Unbalance is the anime within an anime featured in Genshiken. They are made by the same studio and absolutely a must see if you liked either one. The don't have anything to do with each other plot-wise but being that members of the Genshiken after school club constantly talk about Kujibiki Unbalance, and you see scenes from the anime (before it was even produced) makes this required viewing. If somehow you happened up Kujibiki first then do yourself a favor and check out Genshiken.
Yuuto Ayase is not interested in girls - if his two housemates are anything to go by, girls are loud, brazen slobs that are best left alone. However, when Yuuto accidentally discovers an important secret of his school’s most popular female, Haruka Nogizaka, the two become bound in a budding friendship. All too soon, Yuuto discovers that, despite her flawless appearance, Haruka is clumsy, naive, and a closet otaku... and he just might be falling for her.
Both are great anime that deal with the otaku culture in a similar way. They both present many aspects of the otaku lifestyle as well as some of the major "otakuish" events like conventions at the tokyo big site or budokan idol live concerts mainly through both humor and romance.
both series deal with the Otaku culture, where Nogizka Haruka is in anime and is very saccharine, Genshiken tries to portray itself in the real world with realistic characters found in the Otaku culture.
The eccentric Suzumiya Haruhi wants nothing more than to meet aliens, time travelers and espers… but she’ll have to settle for the everyday Kyon instead! Along with the mysterious Itsuki and the vacant Mikuru, the duo forms the SOS Brigade – a club whose mission is to discover the mysteries of the world. Armed with a razor sharp wit and a skill for manipulation, Haruhi will stop at nothing to have fun at all costs, even at the expense of Mikuru’s dignity!
I think if you liked Genshiken you will like Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya because they share an absolutely crazy style of comedy that is fairly unique in the anime realm.
Each show a comedic genius in its own right, these shows both poke fun at anime fandom and otaku in general. The ensemble of characters in each show are very different, but both shows succeed in entertaining anyone, particularly fans who are looking to poke fun at themselves and their lifestyle.
