Full Metal Panic and Ai Yori Aoshi share an uncanny bond. They both will make you spew soda all over your screen from massive histeria, if you take a drink at the wrong time. However, the Second SV unit is a total joke. These are both mecha animes in what i would call a fairly realistic future sci fi type (sorry to raxephon and evangelion, but they are a little more farfetched) The mecha scenes just seem so believable (except for that damn giant red one in fmp... but i guess it's ok too) additionally the military organization and police force setting is quite similar, though you get more frequent escapes to school in fmp.

These two series are what I like to refer to as a "soldier theme" series. Meaning, that they deal with soldiers, and all the classic themes and stories. The stories usually are, fighting far away yet have a love back home to think of, soldiers who wish to die, friend vs friend, heroic tales against the odds, death of comrades to name a few.
