Project A-Ko

Project A-Ko

A-ko is the brawn, B-ko is the brains, and C-ko is, well, C-ko. They'd make a great team, but A-ko and B-ko are rivals for C-ko's friendship, and if that wasn't confusing enough, there's an army of extra-planetary forces gunning for her too. The battle begins, though not without some comedy!

Project-Ako is quite possibly the original anime parody. It pokes fun at just about every aspect of anime. Though older and not quite as "zaney" as FLCL, it still is a great series worth watching.

Golden Boy

Golden Boy

Having recently dropped out of law school, where he had finished the graduation requirements but didn't actually graduate, Kintaro Oe is on a new self-driven quest for knowledge. His adventures will lead him to a variety of workplaces including a computer firm, noodle shop, and even an animation studio, where his seemingly perverse attitude always tends to get him into trouble with the opposite sex. The moral of the story? Study! Study! Study!

Read or Die oozes style from every pore, but when I think of anime with style, the first title to pop into my head is FLCL just because it's so unique. Fans of RoD's action ought to enjoy the twisted mecha battles in FLCL; fans of RoD's ultra-campy world ought to find something to like in FLCL's juxtaposition of the real and unreal.

URDA

URDA

On the battlefields of World War II, a new threat is realized as a mysterious ship from the future is warped back in time to the 1940s. The ships' two living passengers are the only ones who know its whereabouts. Now two elite agents must stop the Nazis from capturing the survivors, finding the ship, and launching their diabolical plan to take over the world, codename: URDA.

Like FLCL, URDA is another recommendation based on the amazing strangeness and difference of style. URDA also opens a new door in the style approach. This is a very weird series, but one of my favorites.

Elf Princess Rane

Elf Princess Rane

Go Takarada would like to believe he's the next Indiana Jones, but how much treasure can he find in his own hometown? Not to be daunted by such trivialities, he continues in his pursuit to find treasure and be famous. His luck turns up when the mystical elf princess Rane appears before him. Together, they seek magic stones and mayhem, despite their inability to communicate. This comedic adventure keeps you laughing right up past the credits.

Random sporadic nonsense litter an otherwise interesting plot, yet you can't help but laugh at the weirdness of it all. FLCL shares a walk through inanity and insanity with Elf Princess Rane, though FLCL is far more violent in its approach. Delivering more "Huh?"s per minute than anything else I've seen.
