Synopsis:

F City, F Prefecture: the battleground where good and evil have finally chosen to decide once and for all who will rule the world…or at least that's the general idea! Neither side seems up for the task, as surviving the brutality of everyday life is enough of a chore. On the side of evil is the organization of Across, its only member the loudmouthed and abrasive Excel who struggles just to put food in her stomach; on the side of good, three disenfranchised, unemployed bachelors whose only pursuit in life is romance. Add in alien invasions, jungle warfare, and Mexican immigrant laborers to Japan, and this war doesn't seem likely to be ending soon!

While Those Who Hunt Elves sticks more to spoofing fantasy, while Excel goes on to spoof all the major genre's. If you liked the wierdness of Excel, or if you're just fond of laughing, I highly recommend this series for you.

The crazy things and people in Excel Saga will laugh you to your grave, and just as funny as they are, are the crazy antics of the odd group called Those Who Hunt Elves will bounce you right back out. It's hard to say which one is better, as Those Who Hunt Elves is shorter and has a plot that makes sense, while Excel Saga is just plain wacky. Either way, if you like one you'll like both.

Adventures of Mini-Goddess, The

Another zany over the top anime, with the added benefit of parodies of many different anime genres, which you should enjoy quite a bit.

Binbougami ga!

Binbougami ga!

On Earth, humans live unaware of the many gods who watch over them and help maintain a sense of balance. But one day, a very special girl named Ichiko Sakura will come face to face with one in the flesh – Momiji, the goddess of misfortune! For Ichiko is unknowingly sapping good fortune from those around her, sporting abnormal levels of beauty, intellect, athletic skill and wealth, and it's up to Momiji to help put things back into order. There's just one problem: selfish Ichiko is fully satisfied with her life, and wants nothing of the sort! Determined to keep her mojo safe from the cranky goddess's giant syringe and wide array of bad luck "devices", Ichiko now must deal with a whole host of supernatural lunatics and the fact that her new tormentor has moved in as an unwanted house guest, all the while trying her best to stay as fabulous as possible!

Both are pretty frantic shows that loves to reference other anime and break the fourth wall every now and then. They both have a pretty ridiculous premise and aren't exactly serious in tone. Excel Saga is way more irreverent and full of high tempo gags, but it's mostly a matter of degree, not kind.

Cat Soup

Cat Soup
  • OVA (1 ep x 33 min)
  • 2001

Cat Soup is an extremely abstract, abnormal, and at times, disturbing adventure, from the director of Nadesico. This 30 minute OVA follows two kittens through what seems to be the underworld, as they search for one of their lost souls. Along the way, they encounter new (edible) friends, scary situations, and even the end of the world! Will these felines manage to return unscathed? Or more importantly, avoid becoming the main course for dinner? Confusion abounds in this quirky OVA.

Take a plot in which you think you know what's going on and mutate it horribly. You'll end up with Excel Saga and Cat Soup. Seriously, the random in-your-face nature of weirdness in each of these anime will almost make you cry from laughing. The imagery in Cat Soup is dark and disturbing while what you see in Excel Saga is very BRIGHT and... well, disturbing...? Certainly worth a watch, in either case.

Colorful

Colorful
  • TV (16 eps x 7 min)
  • 1999

The everyday life of the average, everyday guy is filled with the hope of getting even just a glimpse of an attractive woman's delicates in any way possible, and in any location: on the subway, in the park, or even under a table. One particular guy, Steve, finds it to be an amazing hobby, and would stoop to new lows to further his collection of panty shots, which he has hung about his room in a most decorative fashion. Colorful is a spastic, strange and extremely high octane way to look at the world of the typical man.

I have to say, both of these shows are very random and sporatic and extremely fun to watch late at night. If you're looking for something different to watch, definitely pick up Colorful or Excel Saga.

Although Excel Saga is way more out there than Colorful, both are very enjoyabl, in my own opinion.
