Long ago there was a battle between angels and humans, which ultimately ended with the angels’ retreat. Twelve thousand years later, the angels have become active again and have begun harvesting humans for nefarious purposes; and only the pilots of the ancient mecha known as Aquarion are able to oppose the angels' tools of war. The pilots have special powers, but the secret to defeating the Angels once and for all lies with the reincarnations of the two beings who defended humanity against the Angels in the past: Apollonius, an Angel who turned his back on his kind in order to protect humanity; and Siren, his human lover. Only Apollonius can awaken the true strength within Aquarion that is needed to defeat the angels; but who is the reincarnation of Apollonius?
Aquarion is made by the same folks and has a similar spiritual feel to Escaflowne. That said, they do both have big robots in them, but the key to their fight sequences is similar in that the characters have to learn how to unlock their abilities. So if you really liked that aspect of Escaflowne definitely give Aquarion a try.
If you like themes like angels, mecha, saving the world, friendship and love development then definitely both series are for you.
They do not share that much as far as setting is concerned since in Escaflowne it is a somewhat fantasy realm, whereas in Aquarion we see a relatively sci-fi oriented universe.
Still, in both shows we have people (and otheworldly beings) with superpowers striving to save what they believe is worth saving while dealing with their own problems. Characters are somewhat similar (Silvia from Aquarion vs main heroine from Escaflowne and their male counterparts).
I hope it didn't turn into a lame excuse for a review. ;-)
Sho Zama, an up and coming motorcycle racer, has been whisked away to the world between shore and sea, Byston Well. The world of Byston Well closely resembles medieval Europe with one exception: it contains giant robots called aura battlers. Brought to this world by the power hungry Drake Luft because he possesses the rare gift of aura, Sho is forced to fight in a war between two warring nations as an aura battler pilot. Can Sho find a way home, and what of the continually-expanding conflict?
So one moment your a normal person living on Earth, then next your in a fantastic land in the middle of a war?
Both of these titles are similar in nature due to the whole fantasy element, but also more so for the mecha, which resemble medieval Armor. Dunbines look a tad insect like, but still hold on to that European Dark Age look.
There is a legend of an angel who fell to Earth many years ago, and was forced to marry a man because he held the key to her only way home. Hundreds of years later, sixteen year old Mikage Aya is the reincarnation of Ceres, the vengeful angel, who must now fight for her life against her family and her own twin brother Aki, the reincarnation of her past evil husband...
Although seemingly different on the surface, both stories involve a young girl unexpectedly caught up in a world of magic, with powers of her own that she wasn't even aware of before. Also, both animes involve a love triangle between the girl and 2 guys.
