Both these series hinge upon:

- using "monsters" to show how fragile and important positive emotions are in making the world worth living in...

- very logical characters...

- getting very "dark" in content when it moves the emotional story forward.

The differences between the two are only that Elfen moves slower (it's 3 years older so it's expected) and has even fewer "laughs."

Now and Then, Here and There

Now and Then, Here and There

Now and Then, Here and There and Elfen Lied both hold the same moral premise: the natural and inherent evil of human nature.  If you enjoy these types of animes and if you're also a fan of violence, then these animes might be right up your alley.  Another thing they have in common is they are both incredibly sad and pull on your heart strings, leaving you wondering and questioning long after they've ended.

Kara no Kyoukai Movie 1: Fukan Fuukei

Kara no Kyoukai Movie 1: Fukan Fuukei

When an odd string of suicides begins to occur at a local high rise building, most of the townsfolk treat it as an unfortunate series of events. One girl, however, senses something more sinister at work - especially when a close friend of hers falls mysteriously ill. After witnessing one of the deaths for herself, Shiki begins to realize that a strange connection exists between each of the girls, and predicts a total of eight will die. With seven dead and the accuracy of her prediction unclear, she sets out to put an end to the killings. Yet, as she nears the truth, she finds herself closer and closer to the brink of death; will Shiki become the town's savior, or the next victim?

This is a recommendation for the whole Kara noKyoukai series, not just the 1st movie...

Both anime offer loads of flying limbs n' stuff. Apart from that Kohta and Kokuto are very similar and so are Lucy and Shiki in a way. Both are excellent series.

Bokurano

Bokurano

When a group of children discover a strange cave at the beach, their lives are forever changed. Inside they find a hide out filled with computers and a man named Kokopelli who gives them a curious offer: to participate in a special game in which they save Earth from fifteen giant monsters. To defeat the invaders, he will give them a powerful mecha of black armor. The children eagerly sign the contract, name their new weapon Zearth, and must now take turns to pilot it; but the 'game' is in fact all too real and the consequences of battle become the stuff of nightmares. With no option to cancel the contract, is there any way to stop the game before it is too late for all of them?

Both authors love torturing characters, that's for shure. Both anime are among the darkest I've seen.

Kurozuka

Kurozuka

In feudal Japan, Kurou and his servant Benkei are fleeing from Kurou's elder brother, who has recently ascended to the throne. In a forest, they come across a house and a strange woman by the name of Kuromitsu, who agrees to harbor them under one condition: that they do not peer into the inner chambers. Soon, they are attacked by the Red Army; they are searching for Kuromitsu, whose blood holds immortality. Fatally wounded, Kurou drinks some of Kuromitsu's blood and gains immortality along with strange abilities; but shortly after, Kurou is seemingly decapitated and wakes up centuries later in a ruined city. In this twisted future the Red Army is omnipresent and still searching for Kuromitsu’s blood, while a rebel army seeks to keep them from acquiring it. With threats at every turn and fueled by his obsession, Kurou sets forth to find Kuromitsu and seek his revenge on the Red Army.

Both animes are of a serious nature, definitely not too young of an audience. Both on the gorey side, and although different story lines, they are both very well put together with a similar feel to them.
