Synopsis:

Throughout his life, Oozora Reiji has always been rather half-hearted. Never able to fully dedicate himself to anything, he lives a sloppy day-to-day existence, until his classmate Yukino introduces him to Dragon Drive -- a virtual reality game. While Reiji garners a passion for the game, it would seem that its founders have other things in mind than simple entertainment. During a special training, Reiji discovers that Dragon Drive is more than just a game, and now must fight for the survival of the dragons as well as all of mankind!

While Dragon Drive is gear towards guys and Angelic Layer is towards girls both series share alot of resemblance to each other. If you replaced the dragons with angels and the D-Zone with the Layer, you'd get Angelic Layer, if Oozora Reiji had a sex change :P. Both series starts off with children playing DD/AL, but then develops the story behind the games. This is where the series differ. Even though story line behind the games in Angelic Layer completely differs I think you'll find it enjoyable.

Take Dragon Drive, replace dragons with angels and you've got Angelic Layer.

Dragon drive is simply a angelic layer, though with dragons instead of dolls. Angelic layer is Dragon Drive with dolls instead of dragons.
sublime
With Angelic Layer and Dragon Drive you're looking at exactly the same plot elements. The only major difference being one series aimed primarily at girls (Angelic Layer, Dolls and lead heroine) and one at boys (Dragon Drive, Dragons and lead hero). But the basics are there in each, fundamentally young kids with talent and "pet" battles in tournaments.
ZDragon
In both animes the heros fight with monsters - puppets in AL, dragon in DD - and become stronger and stronger like that.

Dragon Drive and Angelic Layer are must-see anime. They both start off seeming like they are about a simple fighting game, but each has a hidden twist that ends up changing the main character and allowing him to make a lot of new friends.

Both Dragon Drive and Angelic Layer involve two kids that discover an amazing game. They must strive to become the best of all the other players, bonding with either their dragon or angel along the way. The animation is good, the music is okay, and the story is cute and fun to watch.

Ran

Topics like friendship and persistence in competition are at the center of these anime. They're a male and female version of the same original idea. The stories mostly concern the mood of the main characters, and adapt to the male/female viewers during the second halves. Dragon Drive turns into a quest to save the world, while Angelic Layer becomes more sentimental.

Halcyon

There's a great chance that if you liked Dragon Drive, you'll love Angelic Layer. Essentially, they're about the same thing: fighting and the rise to fame. Dish in some comedy, relationships and teamwork, and you have both series in a nutshell. But where Dragon Drive is mostly directed towards the male audience, Angelic Layer is mostly targeted at females. This, however, should not stop you from watching this series, as it's pure brilliance.

xdarkangel

if you replace "Dragon" with "Angels" and "D Zones" with "Layers" you have Angelic Layer it is just that the story unfoldes differently....

Flame of Recca and Dragon Drive have quite a few different similarites to them. For instance, each character has their own elemental weapon in Recca, whereas each character in Dragon Drive have their own Dragon. And of course the main good guy/bad guy combination have the "opposite" powers, that are supposed to be equal. In any case, they are both a great fighting anime, although I liked Flame of Recca a bit better myself. But if you liked one, you'd love the other!

Dragon Drive and Inuyasha are both fighting anime packed full of action and adventure. You are sure to love one if you love the other. They other 'suprising' similarity is the ever-ellusive bad-guy in each one. Those pesky bad-dudes!!

Hunter X Hunter and Dragon Drive are very similar on so many levels, but I think it's the overall atmosphere that really puts them together. They both have a fairly light-hearted feel, and they are both packed full of action and adventure. They are also both fighting animes where the characters keep developing their skills as fighters and the story progresses.

Both Vision of Escaflowne and Dragon Drive use the idea of going to another world and being trapped there as a major plot point. Also, aside from small similarities, such as Escaflowne having huge mechs that are controlled by the humans, and Dragon Drive having huge Dragons being controlled by the humans. But what's more is that you have to bond with each one... etc. Also the connection between the Guymelfs and the Dragon's are quite a similar idea, not to mention the 'hero' in each series has a lengendary mech/dragon.
