Bastard!!

Bastard!!

The Four Lords of Havoc have one terrible goal – to awaken the god Anthrasax and recreate the world. To stop them, Yoko, a maiden of Metallicana, awakens the ancient wizard Dark Schneider from within a 14-year old boy by bestowing upon him her virgin kiss. The only problem now is that the most chaotic, lecherous wizard in history resides inside the body of an innocent child. Even worse, he’s determined that neither hydras nor minotaurs should stand between him and his dream to conquer everyone and take the women for himself… all of which is less than convenient when trying to save the world!

Each of these series feature extremely ridiculous fights and people recovering from extreme injuries along with many people attempting to take over a world.

Born beneath the gallows tree from which his dead mother hung, Guts has always existed on the boundary between life and death. After enduring a terrible childhood, he spends his adulthood in brutal combat, pitting his strength against others in order to build his own. Life is simple enough for Guts until he meets Griffith, the inspirational, ambitious, and beautiful leader of the mercenaries, the Band of the Hawks. When Guts loses to Griffith in a duel, he is forced to join the group, and, despite himself, finds a sense of camaraderie and belonging amongst them. However, as Griffith leads his soldiers from victory to victory, the bloody wars and underhanded politics reveal a side to him that nobody quite expected. Can Guts, a simple warrior, defend those who have come to mean the most to him, all the while struggling not to lose to the darkness he has carried with him his entire life?

This takes the maturity control and turns it up a lot. If you have a secret desire to see lots of violence and killing, but can't take the simplistic storyline of DBZ, this could very well be your next favorite. I don't suggest this anime to anyone under 13 though, due to more complex plot and much more graphic violence.

D.Gray-man

D.Gray-man

An akuma is a soul which has been brought back to life through sadness and despair with the powers of Millenium Earl. Their mission is to terrorize the earth and all who dwell within it. The Black Order is a group of Exorcists that have sworn to cleanse the souls of the akuma, and collect the substance known as "innocence". This powerful substance can be used as an anti-akuma weapon, and ultimately can help destroy the evil Millenium Earl. Allen Walker is a young Exorcist who has the ability to tell who is human and who is an akuma with the help of his cursed eye. Together with the Black Order, Allen must find all 109 pieces of innocence to protect the world and defeat Earl.

Anyone who enjoyed Dragonball Z and its hero, Son Goku, will certainly find D.Gray-man's protagonist, Allen Walker, to be a nostalgic breath of fresh air. Though different in many ways, both shows offer wonderful fight scenes, as well as both funny and sad moments that make such series so enjoyable. D.Gray-man is a modern Dragonball Z, with more weapons and less muscle, that is loads of fun to watch.

Dragon Drive

Dragon Drive

Throughout his life, Oozora Reiji has always been rather half-hearted. Never able to fully dedicate himself to anything, he lives a sloppy day-to-day existence, until his classmate Yukino introduces him to Dragon Drive -- a virtual reality game. While Reiji garners a passion for the game, it would seem that its founders have other things in mind than simple entertainment. During a special training, Reiji discovers that Dragon Drive is more than just a game, and now must fight for the survival of the dragons as well as all of mankind!

Overall, Dragonball Z can be said to follow a certain formula - bad guy shows up, heroes gain in power, then beat said bad guy. Of course there is much more to it than that, but Dragon Drive follows sort of the same principle. Except instead of world-shattering ki powers, each person has a personalized dragon to fight for him. The story is quite RPG-esque, but if you liked DBZ, there's a good chance you'll like this one just as much.
