Japan has reclaimed its former glory under the guidance of Kings, charismatic individuals wielding incredible powers. But now, one of the Red King's vassals has been murdered, and a viral video shows the killer's confession at the scene. He is one Yashiro Isana, claiming to be the Colorless King; and he is now a wanted man - not only to the Red King's faction, but also the Blues charged with keeping the peace. He is even sought by Kuroh Yatogami, a knight of the former Colorless King sworn to slay any unworthy successor. Only, the subject of their struggle, "Shiro", is a nondescript young man living an unremarkable life in an island academy, and seems to have no recollection of killing anyone. To keep his life, Shiro must prove his innocence; but what is the truth behind his mysterious past, and what will be the outcome of this confrontation of Kings?

Both Deadman Wonderland and Kamisama Dolls have horrorific events to startle their viewers right from the first episode.  Kamisama Dolls has more humor than Deadman Wonderland, so if you are looking for a lighter, more comedic DW, then check out Kamisama, and vice versa.  Both anime also involve characters with special powers.

Pandora Hearts

Pandora Hearts

On the eve of nobleman Oz Bezarius's fifteenth birthday, he and his loved ones gather to celebrate in a coming-of-age ceremony. But after Oz steps under a long-stopped clock and the hands finally move once more - thus fulfilling a mysterious prophecy - he is violently thrown into the legendary prison known as the Abyss by three cloaked intruders. Existing in another dimension, the Abyss is home to lifeforms born within its walls known as Chains; these beings can only live in the real world if they make contracts with humans, binding their power to the person's body. However, there's a catch - in time, the human will be overcome by the Chain's power and then thrown into the deepest level of the Abyss. When Oz wakes up in the Abyss he is quickly attacked by hungry Chains, only to be saved by one named Alice - a Chain who appeared just before he was thrown into the prison. Together, the two make a contract and return to the real world, where they are enlisted into the Pandora organization - a group researching both the Abyss and the trio that threw Oz into it.  Along with members of Pandora, the duo searches to find Alice's lost memory fragments that are scattered throughout the world, to discover the secrets of the Abyss, and to determine if there's a way their contract can be broken without killing either Oz or Alice.

Super depressing and sinisterly dark first episode--both Pandora Hearts and Deadman Wonderland have this.

On their respective first episodes, the main character recieves unfit judgment, and this in turn induces overflowing confusion such that the audience would almost give up hope for the protagonist. This almost made me give up both series.

Indeed, the world is against both main characters, but as their stories progress, they both acquire the courage to fight back against the cruel destinies forced unto them.

Conspiracies, deception, the face of the cruel and sinister reality. If you like heavy darkness, you'll love both Pandora Hearts and Deadman Wonderland!

Abandon all hope...and live anew.

As he leaves the room and ventures further into the warehouse he is attacked by a girl in a mask; she tells him that in order to live he must come at her with all his might. After a fight for his life, he manages to overpower the girl, learning that he is to be trained as a Phantom - an assassin for the Inferno organization. He is also given a new name: Zwei. For three months, Zwei is trained by the girl in the arts of assassination until he has just one final test: to kill a living human being.

Without focusing on gore, sex or supernatural horror, these both Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~ and Deadman Wonderland put an average human being into an unspeakable world of darkness where only their inner will to survive prevails.

Both Deadman Wonderland and Shadow Star Narutaru focus on what happens when people receive supernatural powers they should never have received, and what happens when people try to exploit each other utilizing these powers. Told through the perspective of coming-to-age, Deadman Wonderland and Shadow Star Narutaru explore how adolescents must struggle in a world where adults left them behind.
