VHD and Darkside Blues, while quite different plot-wise, both share a similar animation style and a very dark, brooding atmosphere. VHD is a more to the point plot, whereas Darkside Blues is more of a "wtf?" thing to watch, yet still is good.

Vampire Hunter D and Darkside Blues both have a very VERY similar atmosphere. The movies play out about the same, although they are based on 2 totally different stories. They both have that "dark" feeling and of course death and destruction and a fantasy feeling to them.

Venus Wars

Venus Wars

Set in the 21st century on a recently terraformed Venus, Venus Wars is the story of a war between two opposing nations, and the effect it has on a group of teenagers. Dark and gritty, with an air similar to that of Akira, it focuses on coming of age during the midst of a planet's devastating war.

Both of these movies had a lot of the same animation style, and the same way they progressed through the story. Darkside Blues is a lot more based on mythical stuff and "magic", while Venus Wars is based on "technology of the future".

While Darkside Blues and Venus Wars have very, very different plots, I got the same kind of feeling while watching both. Each of these films is quite dark in nature, and animation-wise, they look fairly similar too. This recommendation might not be as cut and dry as others, but I do think they feel very much the same.

Maybe it's because we watched these 2 back-to-back, but both of them seem to have a similar animation style as well as atmosphere. They both have that dark, "something isn't quite right here" felling to them.

Twilight of the Dark Master

Twilight of the Dark Master

Darkside Blues and Twilight of the Dark Master both have a gritty, dark feel to them that are full of sinister characters. Though Darkside Blues definitely doesn't have as much of a plot, both definitely have a similar feel to them. Try it out.

Two movies with complex stories and characters running around with strange powers trying to kill each other. You'll have to watch each one at least twice to piece together what's going on, but you'll get to see plenty of people flying around throwing magic at each other in the mean time.
