Cromartie High School

Alt titles: Sakigake!! Cromartie Koukou

Synopsis:

At Cromartie High, it’s tough being a delinquent -- a fact that do-gooder Takashi Kamiyama intimately understands. When he’s not engaging in contests of strength and rival gang wars, Kamiyama can also be found submitting punny jokes and planning his own rise to fame within the delinquents’ ranks, and that’s just the beginning! With friends like robotic Mechazawa, a giant gorilla, a hairy man from the 80s named Freddie and a clan of delinquents with mohawks that flow in the wind, how can anyone not enjoy high school?

Cromartie and Gag Manga Biyori are both random comedies with a twist: the humor is completely dry and spastic. Unlike slapstick-type series like Excel Saga, these two will only appeal to a certain audience; so if you liked one of these, odds are you'd like the other as well (though I enjoyed Cromartie far more).

Gag Manga Biyori 2

This may seem a little odd, so allow me to explain:

It was tough to find a series that was comparable to the crazy, bizarre, cooky Chromartie High School, but after much searching, I found one.

You see, the english voiceover for Ghost Stories is notorious for being crazy, zany, and even improvised by the voice actors.  The end result is a very funny, albiet wierd show that has a very similar feel to this show.

Gintama

Gintama

In Gintoki's Japan, the arrival of the various space races known collectively as the Amanto ended the era of the samurai. The Amanto's highly advanced technology resulted in total conquest and a severe economic shift. Now, former samurai such as Gintoki scrape together whatever livelihood they can. Gintoki's profession of choice is that of a yorozuya: he'll complete any job for money. However, he’s unmotivated; and spending most of the day on the couch with the latest issue of Jump and a carton of Strawberry Milk is his preferred pastime. It turns out that his new unpaid employees, Shinpachi and Kagura, are going to interfere with his pastime even more than with his "work"! Of course, none of this means he has really given up on his samurai ideologies!

I'm pretty much complete flabbergasted that no one has cross recommended these shows.  Genuinely entertaining slapstick comedy is a rare find these days, and both Gintama and Cromartie pull it off impeccably.

You really won't find such wonderful visual gags and deadpan punchline delivery this entertaining outside of Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker production from the 1980s.

These shows are all about the trials and tribulations of delinquent students. So if you like shows that show high school boys trying to prove their manliness, especially in unconvincing ways, both of these shows are for you.
