FLCL

FLCL

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What's more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota's father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.' Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head - amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn't so bad after all...

Reasons you might like FLCL...

AnarchicQ AnarchicQ says...

The abstract, sureal, absurdist designs and situations in both of these anime make them seem like siblings. If you liked one, definitely check out the other!

AirCommodore AirCommodore says...

This is sort of a gut feeling recommendation, but I got a really similar feeling from FLCL and Cencoroll. They're both absurdist sci-fi anime with very little wasted time. I love both.

awpaperwings awpaperwings says...

These two are like peas in a pod. Both are short and sweet, absurd yet insanely interesting. Both in less than then length of a regular movie tell and interesting story, maybe have a little romance and just have some great sci fi material. Highly reccomended.

Omurqi Omurqi says...

Sanity is overrated. If you loved how nonsensical and yet appealing one of these short sci-fi stories were, it's definitely worth checking out the other.

Xplayer Xplayer says...

While there are many anime that intentionally leave things unexplained, the relationship between FLCL and Cencoroll is a little deeper. Both have a very distinct sense of apathy towards the ridiculousness of the world they create. While FLCL changes between apathy and hilarity, Cencoroll pretty much stays with apathy the whole time. Both are also very well animated and have quirky soundtracks.

Ailly Ailly says...

Both these anime will leave you wondering what the hell it is you've just watched. They don't make a lot of sense, but just demand you  sit back and enjoy the absurd nonsense on the screen. Both also involve otherworldy creatures and have a similar animation style. Fans of weird titles shouldn't miss out on these two!

Denno Coil

Denno Coil

In a futuristic world, the virtual world is merely a layer on top of reality; within it, cyberpets are abundant and information is plentiful, and it is only visible by wearing special cyberglasses. In Daikoku City, this cyberspace is behaving strangely: cyberpets are going missing, dark entities known as "the Illegal" roam obsolete space that shouldn’t exist, and a large pink antivirus program known as Satchii wanders the streets, attacking both virus and pets alike. Sixth grader Yuko Okonogi has just moved to Daikoku City, and after cyberdetective children help her rescue her lost dog, she soon joins the others in a search for the truth behind these strange occurances.

Denno Coil is longer and feels more lighthearted than Cencoroll, but both combine sci fi with cute creatures of sorts and have a similar feel.

AnarchicQ AnarchicQ says...

Both anime have an otherworldly, line blurring quality to them. They're both surreal and involve kids in heavy, dangerous situations.

Alien Nine

Alien Nine

At a typical elementary school in Japan, yearly chores are being distributed. Yuri and 3 other students are chosen to be the beneficiaries of the alien hats for the year. Alien hats?! Yuri's sentiments, exactly. Despite her misgivings, she and her classmates must round up stray aliens that have escaped from a crashed spaceship -- with the help of the alien hats, of course.

Alien Nine and Cencoroll successfully combine cute creatures with cute children and a dark streak of violence - Alien Nine being the far more disturbing of the two. Fans of one should DEFINITELY check out the other.

valondar valondar says...

Weird, ugly and contorting alien creatures that are controlled by young children who can use these bizarre things to fight similar creatures. What's going on? Why's it going on?

Do either questions really matter? Cencoroll is a cool, lackadaiscal mood piece where the details of its plot is beside the point, while Alien Nine merely uses the weird set-up as a way to emotionally torment the girls stuck with the task (it hints at some broader scheme that never coalesces, and I doubt it could have, at that).

Shadow Star Narutaru

Shadow Star Narutaru

While visiting her grandparents on a remote island, Shiina Tamai, our young protagonist, inadvertently finds a strange star shaped creature, which she names Hoshimaru. This creature, while seemingly harmless and unusual, holds many secrets. As Shiina and her new friend Akira soon find out, their creatures are much more than they seem to be...and against their will, they are thrown into a dangerous and hostile situation of trying to save the world from others who would use their dragonets to enslave it.

sothis sothis says...

Narutaru is way, way more messed up than Cencoroll, but it's impossible to not see the similarities between the two. Both star kids who control various cute yet deadly monsters and end up battling each other. Fans of one will definitely appreciate the other.

AnarchicQ AnarchicQ says...

NaruTaru is much, much darker than Cencoroll, but they both have the same fighting monster feel. But what sets these two apart from say, Pokemon, is that there's a real sense of danger and consequence in both of these shows. If you liked one you'll like the other.

Spirited Away

Spirited Away

After Chihiro's family mysteriously turn into pigs, she is thrown into a surreal world of magic and fantasy. Join her as she struggles to survive in the bathhouse of the gods, ruled by an evil witch who has stolen not only her name, but her way back to the real world.
