Synopsis:

In the year 2977, humanity has long passed its peak; machines are able to perform any task a human can, and people have succumbed to apathy. However, there remains one who refuses to accept such an existence: Captan Harlock, a pirate who sails the sea of stars aboard his ship, the Arcadia. He is feared and loathed by most inhabitants of Earth, and yet he is their only hope against the Mazones, a strange alien race of beautiful women that threatens humanity. Thus begins a lonely battle in which Harlock and the crew of Arcadia struggle to stay true to their ideals, while slowly unravelling the sad tale of the Mazones.

Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar

Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar

In the year 2199, unrelenting attacks from the planet Gamilus have forced all life on Earth into underground dwellings and raised radiation levels to near-toxic levels. The only way to clean up all this harmful radiation is by using the Cosmo Cleaner, which the Queen of the planet Iscandar has generously offered to humanity. Unfortunately, Iscandar is 148,000 light years away, but Earth only has one year before rising radiation levels make it uninhabitable! The only vessel capable of making the journey is the battleship Yamato - a rusty relic of World War II. Can the crew of the Yamato make it to Iscandar and back before the extinction of all life on Earth?

Both are 70's TV series that were created by/based on the works of Leiji Matsumoto.  They both have the same character design style and both series involve a lone space ship traveling through space as Earth's last defence against an evil empire.  If you like one, then you will probably like the other.

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross

Super Dimensional Fortress Macross

A strange spaceship crashes onto the island of South Ataria, throwing the world into disarray over its fate. Thus begin the Unification Wars, a worldwide war that eventually unites the planet under the governance of the United Nations. Now, a decade later, the reconstruction of the crashed alien craft – dubbed "Macross" – is complete. However, on the day of its christening, the Macross unexpectedly fires and destroys several approaching Zentradi spaceships. The last hope of Earth, the Macross, begins to wage a lonely war; but what hopes can one ship have when facing against an entire alien race?

Both are excellent space opera in which the main leads are defending earth from an invading enemy. The main difference is Harlock has almost no support from Earth himself and must battle the enemy himself with his crew while Macross has a little help and support from Earth. If you liked one definitely check out the other!
