Ai Yori Aoshi is a good romantic anime, though nowhere near as good as Kare Kano or To Heart . The premise and beginning 5-7 episodes are extremely good, quality anime, but unfortunately the story lags a bit after the first 10 episodes or so. Also, the amount of fanservice decreases the impact of the quite innocent characters and storyline. All in all, definitely worth a look.

Amagami SS

Amagami SS

After being stood up during a date on Christmas Eve, Junichi’s confidence took a critical nosedive. Two years later, he’s now a second year high school student and ready to give love another chance. Will he fall for the beautiful and popular Morishima, mischievous childhood friend Kaoru, shy and timid underclassman Sae, dependable class president Tsukasa, hardworking underclassman Ai or his gluttonous childhood friend Rihoko? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: Junichi is determined to make his next Christmas Eve date a successful one!

While Boys Be is more a set of stories about multiple, seperate characters which manage to vaguely intersect, Amagami SS has fewer characters, and opts for more of a 'what-if' setup. Boys Be punctuates things with some heart-wrenching moments, while Amagami introduces humor to keep things from getting too heavy. These are really the only two major differences between the two, and the way the each story is told is quite similar -- a series of romantic tales of boy-meets-girl. If one appeals to you, I think it likely the other will as well, as long as you keep in mind the serious/humorous lean each takes.

Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh

Ten-year-old genius Chiyo, animal-loving Sakaki, loudmouth Tomo, athletic Kagura, weight-conscious Yomi and dim-witted Osaka are six friends who share laughs, good times, and a high school homeroom. With scary (and sometimes perverted) teachers, school festivals, penguin suits and general hilarity abounding, you can be sure that there's never a dull day in the life of one of these students!

To me, Boys Be is one of those feel-good series that puts someone's romance in danger. It even has a good plot. Azumanga doesn't have the same level of romance--these are all young girls and no boys to fill in the gap--but I enjoyed the series as one that just makes the viewer feel good. (Is it their cuteness?)

Chobits

Chobits

Having failed to earn admission to a university, Hideki Motosuwa has moved to the big city, determined to study his hardest for next year's exams. However, an unusual distraction presents itself one unsuspecting day in the form of Chii, a robotic young girl that has been discarded in the trash. In a world where an increasing number of people turn to these 'persocoms' for company, the bonds and limits of human relationships are tested as flesh manages to fall in love with the machine itself...

In comparison Boys Be and Chobits are extremely similar. The two series revolve around a central theme of uncertain love. The two shows undergo a way of complicating relationships and bringing about a great deal of confusion within the characters. While the relationship is clearly defined in Boys Be, there are still many times when things turn awkward. If you've watched one or the other you'll find that the stories told show identical properties as each character tries to find his/her own happiness in others.

Gunparade March

Gunparade March

In the year 1945, the most terrible creatures in existence visited the earth: bug-like entities soon to be known as Phantom Beasts. In that time of peril, mankind joined together to expel the threat, only to find that conventional weapons were useless and further damaged the earth. It is now 1999, and the student-wide draft has changed the lives of thousands of teenagers across Japan. While unwillingly fighting in an endless war that started before their births, one group of friends will experience the tragedy of death and the bittersweet joy of love as they struggle to survive.

Remove some of the melancholy, but not too much -- add a dash of humor -- and a pinch of mecha -- and what comes out is Gunparade March, a shounen romance series that doesn't take itself quite so seriously as Boys Be, but is enjoyable nonetheless.
