Alien Nine

Alien Nine

At a typical elementary school in Japan, yearly chores are being distributed. Yuri and 3 other students are chosen to be the beneficiaries of the alien hats for the year. Alien hats?! Yuri's sentiments, exactly. Despite her misgivings, she and her classmates must round up stray aliens that have escaped from a crashed spaceship -- with the help of the alien hats, of course.

Both shows are a good mix of very good sci-fi, action and a subtle blend of dark humour. I like shows that aren't afraid to play with the psyche, and Bokurano and Alien Nine achieve this with aplomb. Don't expect a happy, feel good ending from these shows, as they are both ominous and foreboding

gleipnir gleipnir says...

Bokurano and Alien Nine both share the concept of children placed in situations where they must fight against otherworldly opponents and shows the effects that such battles have on those involved, from the children themselves to the adults that take care of them.  Bokurano is more character-driven on the whole, but both are still emotionally wrenching series.

chocobolily chocobolily says...

Alien Nine and Bokurano are two series which set themselves apart with their characters--they feature children who are forced to grow up fast when put in dangerous situations.  In the former, young girls are assigned to eliminate dangerous aliens who are attacking their school; in the latter, a group of kids must engage in dangerous mecha battles in which death is guaranteed.  As dark and twisted as these anime sound, though, I wouldn't say they become perverse or over-the-top in an offensive way.

Danganronpa: The Animation

Danganronpa: The Animation

Hope’s Peak Private Academy is a super-exclusive institute that gathers the best and the brightest, provides them with a world-class education, and propels them into any career they wish. At least, that’s what the average student Naegi used to think. Having been accepted into a class of 15 students through a lottery system, the boy quickly comes to learn that Hope’s Peak is no ordinary school. In reality, he and the group find themselves trapped inside and learn that the only way to "graduate" is to murder a fellow student and fool everyone in a trial that determines life or death! Led by the whimsically-cruel, teddy-bear-like Monobear, Naegi and the others must do whatever it takes to escape this bizarre, deadly game.

A bunch of kids put into a seemingly hopeless situation that will result in death - though mostly this rec. is due to the similarity between Monobear and Koyemshi, two absurdly maniacal creatures with terrifying grins who revel in explaining the rules of play to a group of frightened teenagers.

cerberus38 cerberus38 says...

The situations of the characters involved in these animes are very similar: Young students have to kill or be killed. Koyemshi and Monobear are strikingly similar, from their psychotic personalities down to their revelation of the rules when it pleases them. Bokurano focusses more on personal tragedies wheras Danganronpa is more of a violent whodunnit. But if you like one check out the other.

PurplePeopleEater PurplePeopleEater says...

Just being a part of the games in these anime pretty much guarentees you will die unless you outwit the mastermind or are the last one standing. Oh, and you didn't volunteer to play. You went to school and......you wound up in a game of life and death with no way to escape except to win or die. Danganronpa focuses on a group of students who are forced into a game where paranoia is rampant and trust is frail. It's kill or be killed, but with one other catch. If the survivors figure out which student was the killer, the killer dies. If they guess wrong. The deaths tend to match the person too in a way. In Bokurano, the rules are a bit different. Each person is forced to pilot the giant robot in a battle. If the person wins, they die, if they lose, the whole world dies. Either way, someone is going to die. In this case, the opponent tends to reflect some part of the pilot character or their story.

Both animes focus on the characters backstories. Both deal with secrets. Oh and both have a sadistic, mechanical/mechanical like, animal or animal like mastermind guiding the game and making trouble.

Noein: To Your Other Self

Noein: To Your Other Self

When Haruka, Yuu and their friends decided to go ghost hunting, they had no idea the "ghosts" they'd find would turn their lives upside down. Black-clad and wielding quantum powers, these knights from the future are after an artifact of immense power that they hope will save their dimension from destruction: the Dragon Torque; and Haruka seems to be the key. As factions within the knights violently disagree on how to proceed, Haruka and the gang are caught up in a fight with the Shangri La, in an existential battle where fates of entire universes are decided.

Noein and Bokurano are very different; each has a unique premise and unusual animation, but I still have a gut feeling that if you liked one of these, you'd like the other. Each has plenty of character development, an interesting flow, and the stories involve very heavy stakes. I have no better way of explaining this recommendation, so you'll just have to trust me! If you liked one of these, you should at least try out the other.

That being said, I did enjoy Bokurano much more, though.

edison23 edison23 says...

Though Bokura no is certainly deeper (read depressive, moving and higher death rate) than Noein, they do have something incommon. Maybe it's how the story is told, maybe it's the charaters and their developement, but if you liked Noein try Bokura no and vice versa. Neither of those have a great animation level (Bokurano is probably more unorthodox in therms of animation), but both have nice OST.

Oh... and both have nice flat-chest female protagonists; some fans might find that interesting.

Mai-HiME and Bokurano both play with emotions. Mai-HiME does start out very different and isn't as serious nor dramatic as Bokurano from the get-go; but the total package of both anime is definitely equally tragic and involving. What's more is that both use some fighting scenes to tie the story together making them even more similar.

NimirRa NimirRa says...

Don't be fooled by the misleading beginning in My-Hime. There is plenty of darkness below the surface of reminiscent of Bokurano. These shows feature children in horrifically difficult situations that leaves them no choice, but to make hard life/death decisions. If you enjoyed the suspense and tragedy you found in one of these shows then you'll like the other.

Both Infinite Ryvius and Bokurano psychologicaly focus on a group of kids facing incredible and pressing circumstances. Both are series with a multidimensional focus, specific to a range of characters, though it could be argued that Infinite Ryvius handles a much larger cast. Both series feature a mecha power aspect, but the emphasis is more on the characters and the consquences that come with using that power.

Character driven dramas that explore the actions and psychology of groups of youth in life threatening situations. They share science fiction settings as well, with Bokurano's being slightly softer overall.

Both series are stories about people who know that they are going to day. We can watch their movements and see what is happening to them just before the death. But both of them also show how we can change our life and face the destiny and fight it. If you like a deeply psychologic series you will like the one i recommend for sure.

Both of the series have a dark plot to them, where characters must keep pushing toward a seemingly pyrrhic victory. You will enjoy how the plots unravel in a very similar fasion.

Are you tired of happy endings? Do you want bunnies to supernova into a sea of misery, with orphans kicking around washed up pop cans along it's beaches? Would you like some constant angst and melancholy to carry a series to it's end? Fantastic! Then by all means check out Bokurano if you enjoyed this about School Days, and vice-versa.

PurplePeopleEater PurplePeopleEater says...

The main similarity between these two is the way the characters develop and how their image changes. Both stories start out with some likable characters and some who just seem downright awful. By the end though, the roles are switched, but only to an extent. The viewer is made to sympathize with the bad ones a bit more, but the weight of their previous sins makes the feelings conflicted while some of the good ones remain good and other good ones go bad but you can't really blame them completely.

At first glance these 2 shows aren't all that similar but my gut tells me otherwise so bare with me. Children suddenly find themselves working to keep the people they love safe. The children in both shows have access to special powers. Mecha in Bokurano, telekinesis in From the New World. The atmosphere and the tone of both shows are very similar along with a dark feeling of doom that keeps you watching to see what will happen next.

So yeah it might just be me that feels these 2 are similar but either way try one if you liked the other.

yamirakuen yamirakuen says...

Although both anime differ greatly in terms of plot, there are a few striking similarities.

1. The protagonists are all children. Most part of Shin Sekai Yori, anyway.

2. The children of both anime are plunged into a cruel conspiracy created by the adults of both worlds. As both anime progress, we will soon realise the truth behind the cruelty of both worlds.

3. In both anime, the children are given special abilities to fight with. In Shin Sekai Yori, the children's psychic powers will awaken when they come of age (i.e., mainly telekinesis). In Bokurano, the children were given robots to pilot.

The common story here is that it's universe against universe in a battle of the fittest, where the universe on top will be allowed to live and the other wiped from existence. Teengers are forced to protect their world and loved ones from annihilation as they themselves drop like flies after each battle. The only assistance allowed for their struggles are a mecha/energy cubes and a similar indifferent overseer of these fights. Bokurano is a heck of a lot more ruthless than Gunslinger, but that doesn't change what these two anime are about and why you saw one: you enjoy watching worlds endeavor to live.

Both involve alternate universes being manipulated into fighting each other for a third alternate universe's benefit.

Two similar stories. Kids are told by some cute but nefarious critters to fight for the good of the world. One is mecha and one is magical girls but they're very similar deconstructions of their respective genres.
