Black Lagoon is touted as action incarnate, an anime interpretation of the heroic bloodshed genre. As a fan of John Woo's Hard Boiled, I must say I was sorely disappointed. The action scenes are nothing special and the characters are overcompensating, spouting expletives and Engrish in an effort to seem cool.

Kenichi Sonoda's Gunsmith Cats is a better entry in the girls with guns sub-genre. It's a quick watch. The characters are likeable. And, even if it came out ten years before Black Lagoon, the setpieces show some imagination.

Girls with guns. Loud American music; lots of attitude. Killer Russian women. Did I mention the guns part?

Black Lagoon is by far the darker and more cynical of the two anime; while Gunsmith Cats is pretty upbeat for a series about girls navigating the messy crime syndicates of Chicago (read: smiling coquettishly, shooting stuff); and while Black Lagoon for its sheer pizazz is by far the better of the two titles; both are a lot of fun to watch.

as far as the qualty of action the two shows are on the same level, although black lagoon is longer and the stroy get to be drawn out better. gunsmith cats defenatly holds its own. oh yeah, both have the whole 'girls with guns' thing going, badass american muscle cars, a car chase or two and a seemingly endless supply of weapons and ammo

Trigun

Trigun

“Vash, the Stampede” - worth 60 billion dollars to the one who can turn him in. Bounty hunters everywhere are on the lookout for this legendary gunman, not to mention insurance agents Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, who are tasked with preventing any potential damage that this Vash can cause. But with 60 billion on his head, Vash is not an easy man to find.

Vash and his shambled crew have NOTHING on this rag tag band of social rejects. But if you liked Trigun, you will enjoy Black Lagoon. Though I am not sure that is truly reversible. As where Trigun is a long drawn out somewhat boring story, with repetitive situations, drab dialogue... and LOTS of that, with some really stupid "comedy" (what with the chibi elements)... Black Lagoon is a grown up series, with superb dialogue, excellent characters, funny comedy, and tolerable "chibi" abuse.

Don't get me wrong, Trigun is a decent series... And if liked it you will love Black Lagoon. I just can't in good faith "ensure" the same in regards to that situation flipped.

Two high energy gunslinger shows that will take you for a ride and not want to stop. If you are interested in fast paced fast paced action in a somewhat episodic fashion then both of these shows are highly recommended. While their stories differ at the core, Trigun discussing the value of human life and Black Lagoon showing the daily life of a group of pirates in the world of crime, both shows are produced well, move quickly and have many enjoyable action scenes.

Vash isn't similar to Rock, but Rock is similar to Wolfwood! Characters are similar, as they like to block problems from them, by deciding on what's just, and that they allow them to happen.

Fate/stay night

Fate/stay night

The Holy Grail War is a battle between seven magicians who each summon a mythical hero to fight for their cause. Shirou, a twice orphaned high school boy, had so little magical talent that his foster father did not bother teaching him about the war and its meaning. Thanks to that lack of foresight, Shirou finds himself in a bit of a pinch when he accidentally summons a hero of the strongest class, and is sucked into the fray. The Grail grants the winner any wish they have. But driven by an unyielding sense of justice and self-sacrifice, for what will Shirou fight?

This recommendation may seem strange for some people as the story, art and such are all very different between Black Lagoon and FSN. This recommendation is for the person that likes strong female characters (more so in Black Lagoon) and some action mixed in. I just think if you liked one, you'd like the other.

eaper eaper says...

Each of these series contain a strong female character that handles most of the violence that is present in each of them, and a main male character that is more or less pushed into an entirely new world that is marked with violence and death. Also, the main male attempts to act as somewhat of a moral conscience in each of the stories at some point.

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

While on the hunt for an underage hacker, Faye is the sole witness to identifying a man who causes a tanker explosion that leaves people up to three miles away in comas. The bounty that ensues is the largest the galaxy has EVER seen, 300,000,000 wulongs. It's up to Spike and the gang to solve the mystery of this strange disease, and to stop the assailant at large, for failure would result in all life on Mars being eliminated on Halloween night.

Aside from obvious similarities in plot (semi-disfunctional ragtag band of hired guns blasting their way to paydirt, etc.), the mood and "vision" that both pieces take are, while not identical, certainly congruent to one another. Excellent treatment of gunplay and a general feeling of moral ambiguity is ubiquitous in both series. Bebop's pacing is slower than Black Lagoon and often steps away from raw action to more noire-ish presentation, but also offers more depth and character development in the process. Fans of John Woo would likely appreciate both series as well, as both draw heavily at one point or another from his bloodsoaked masterpieces from the 80's.

Even though I believe that Black Lagoon was somehow more interesting to me than Coboy bebop series; the Bebop movie is just genius... It is a great story with very interesting plot and script that keeps you excited for the whole duration of the movie.

Anyone that hasn't seen these Series or this Movie, I strongly recconment it :)

Violence and action is the main thing that connects Black Cat and Black Lagoon. But the thing that is most valuable in many similar genre titles, including this one, is the mental state of a human under such circumstances.

Mattnet Mattnet says...

Both anime have amazing gunfights and even if story are very different, in think if you like one of them, you'll like the other as well.
