BLAME!

BLAME!

BLAME! is a very dark and abstract set of 6 shorts which are based on the manga by Tsutomu Nihei. The "story" (if it can be called that) revolves around a man named Killy: a human living amongst clones and androids. His task, it seems, is to collect things known as "net-genes", and to help find the remaining humans that may or may not exist.

One could argue that both of these anime are influenced by the Matrix movies, in that they all investigate humanity's relationship with a digital world, and android counterparts.

Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments Lain

"I have only abandoned my body, I still live here" - are the words emailed to friends of Chisa, several days after her death by suicide. As Lain delves deeper into the world of the "Wired" (also known as the internet), the line between it and reality becomes more and more unclear. Close the world, open the nExt.

Seracen Seracen says...

Lain, like BALDR FORCE, is another series that explores human-kind's forays into a virtual world of machines and technology. The pacing of the show is monotonously slow at times, but the emotional drama builds quite nicely.

Kiyohime Kiyohime says...

The psychological and horror elements in both these animes are truly unforgettable. In both animes the characters are going through some kind of past psychological trauma that cause them to behave irrationally. While Elfen Lied is more laid back, both animes have a "unlock the secrets of the past and all will be revealed" type of deal. Horror, death, and angst are filled in both of these dark animes.
