The leaders of their group are Ryota and Chika - Ryota's childhood friend who has a crush on him that she can’t seem to confess. While Chika continues on, remaining a close and valued friend, Ryota continues to be a typical boy who is oblivious to her feelings. Furthermore, he can’t seem to stay out of trouble with the ladies! While the two anime are based around a different time in adolescence, both Azumanga Daioh and Kyo no Go no Ni (Today in class 5-2) take a lighthearted glimpse into the lives of a group of classmates. Both anime follow a similar format of 5 minute shorts which are then grouped together into amalgamated "episodes". While there is more fan service in Kyo no Go no Ni, both series take similar tack towards the subject of teen sexuality: mainly humorous gawping and a lot of blushing.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

A lighthearted approach to school? A fun look on the other sex? Or just another funny anime with a relaxed pace? Whichever you want, both Azumanga Daioh and Kyou no Go ni should offer you similar things.

Temsik Temsik says...

Azumanga Daioh and Kyou no 5-2 is one hundred percent same type of comedy. Even the structure of the episodes is the same, divided into small "adventures". If you liked Azumanga, then you will definitely like Today in Class 5-2.

jurexplay jurexplay says...

The random humour is what blends them both and that makes these series so damn hilarious. The humour is always fresh and the characters keep suprising you throughout the whole show as they are incredibly unpredictable. If you liked one you should enjoy the other.

Sheex Sheex says...

There's really no too much to say about this rec; both Azumanga Daioh and Kyou no Go no Ni use a fragmented slice-of-life/comedy mix to humorously follow the lives of a group of kids in a classroom setting. Though not quite as well defined or structured as Azumanga, Kyou no Go carries a similar feel regardless. The only major difference between the two is that Kyou no Go tends to incorporate more sexually-oriented humor; it is, however, very innocently approached, so its not overtly offensive - after all, both series rely on an innocent charm to come across as funny.

Hyakko

Hyakko

Kamizono Academy is so spacious that transfer student Ayumi Nonomura and long time resident Tatsuki Iizuka find themselves lost together in the corridors. With the addition of fiery Torako Kageyama and quirky, somber Suzume Saotome, the four quickly become friends and comrades in arms against boredom. Whether it's being a last minute Morals Officer with bisexual Nene or constructing robots with Kageyama, there's plenty of fun to go around at Kamizono Academy!

Azumanga Daioh is one of the most quintessential slice of life comedies that's out there; Hyakko is a less-funny runner up. Both have similar elements of humor and wacky antics that you'll enjoy. If you like schoolkid comedies, you'd like both of these (though Azumanga is far superior).

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Hyakko and Azumanga Daioh are a perfect match in every way possible. Both are highschool centered comedies that derive their humor from the eccentric personalities of a very amusing female cast. Not only are they random and without a plot as the kind of character based humor and the interaction between the girls is very similar. Fans of one are bound to enjoy the other.

chinaboat chinaboat says...

Another "slice of life" comedy, Azumanga doesn't have the depth of the characters in Hyakko but I would say it is overall more entertaining.

neutrino neutrino says...

Both are slice-of-life comedies about the strange characters from a particular class in high school.  The value of both of these shows come from outrageous personalities and hilarious situations.  Furthermore, many of the personalities you find in one are also in the other.

kenikki kenikki says...

AD is highly superior to Hyakko in every way imo, but they are very similar in nearly every aspect, so try one if you like the other.

If you were to replace all the stupid (and hilarious) little jokes in Azumanga with overly perverted jokes, you would probably get SYD. They both focus on short comedy bits placed in high school.

scizorg45 scizorg45 says...

So you got the formula Azumangah + perverted jokes = Seitokai Yakuindomo. Both have no plot, awesome characters and enough funny jokes to keep you busy for hours.

If you liked one you will probably like the other.

Nicknames Nicknames says...

Both Azumanga Daioh and Seitokai Yakuindomo takes place in a highschool and both have random humor. The main difference is that Seitokai Yakuindomo have a lot of perverted jokes while Azumanga Daioh just have silly jokes. Both shows are really funny but, if you prefer perverted humor instead of random humor, watch Seitokai Yakuindomo, if you just want silly jokes and randomness, watch Azumanga Daioh.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both of these high school comedies have a similar feel to them. There's a lot of rather quirky characters (mostly female) with a penchant for chibifying themselves; lots of gags and wordplay; and finally, virtually no overarching plot is to be found in either work. The main difference is that the humour in Seitokai is almost entirely based on sex and bodily functions while Azumanga has a more down-to-earth and situational approach.

AstralKnight AstralKnight says...

Similar characters, both are school life, the only difference is that Azumanga Daioh focuses more on cutesy random humour and Seitokao Yakuindomo is a bit more on the perverted side.

sothis sothis says...

Azumanga is the classic school life comedy about girls doing nothing - Aiura is another lighthearted romp in the same vein, albeit less random and silly. If you liked one, try out the other.

Bronia Bronia says...

Aiura is a lot like Azumanga Daioh with a smaller cast and shorter episodes. Both have character focused humor- as in the cast is absolutely full of weirdos. If you like either show, then look no further!

Bradalee Bradalee says...

If you're after some school life comedy about girls doing nothing then look no farther than these two shows. Aiura differs from Azumanga Daioh in that it's a short series, but if you liked one then chances are you will find the other entertaining enough.

globalwild globalwild says...

The similarities between Aiura and Azumanga Daioh are apparent almost immediately, but there is more than just funny moments shared between high school girls in these stories.  Sure both will bring about genuine laughter, but it's the lack of any substantial plot or climactic moment that actually adds to these stories. Despite the short length of Aiura's episodes, it is able to capture the basics of school life in a very identifiable way. It almost feels like these are the moments that are happening before, after, or possibly alongside larger unseen events, and in many ways that mirrors the daily lives of many people (high school girl or not). The longer episode and series length of Azumanga Diaoh allows for more characters and depth overall, but the premise is still the navigation of high school life and the randomness that comes along with that. Both series are lighthearted, refreshing, and will likely leave you both satisfied and wanting more.

both of them both have the school setting, with the characters forging a stronger and stonger friendship as the story line progresses.

If you like Comedies like Azumanga Dioh, you will absolutely love Love Hina. But while Azumanga Dioh is mostly about girls Love hina tends to be more of a boys story. Though you can enjoy this anime who ever you are, it´s more for those who like love stories and such..

gunslinger92 gunslinger92 says...

Let's just put it this way. Both are filled with cute girls, each of which has her own well-developed personality, that are constantly being put in situations that just beg to be laughed at. But beware of the "ultra-cuteness" factor if you happen to suffer from diabetes or if you don't want cavity after cavity.

sayuri sayuri says...

The dynamic within the core group of girls has a very similar feel to it in both shows. They also share similar character styles and humour. Both Azumanga Daioh and Love Hina are very silly, which is part of the charm.

lldmer lldmer says...

Although the setting is a little different in both anime, what they have in common is the silly/humour factor. Azumanga Daioh is a little bit more weird, and Love Hina has more love and drama. But the main thing that makes both anime appealing to me is that I can't watch either of them without continuously having a wide grin across my face.
