Over a century ago, mankind was devoured by giant beings of unknown intelligence and origin known as Titans – creatures that eat humans alive indiscriminately and for no apparent reason. The remaining population has managed to survive the last hundred years only by building a multi-walled city capable of keeping the Titans at bay, training military recruits to patrol the perimeter and gather intelligence about their mysterious foe. Since That Day offers a glimpse into the daily lives of Eren Yeager, Mikasa Ackerman, and Armin Arlert during their childhood in Shiganshina District before the fall of Wall Maria. The plot centers around a training exercise where the trio, along with other characters, explores the area outside the walls. While the episode doesn't contribute significantly to the overarching plot of the series, it provides background information on the characters and hints at the camaraderie that existed before the Titans breached the walls. The OVA focuses on character interactions and dynamics, showcasing the relationships between Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and their peers. It sheds light on their personalities, aspirations, and the bonds that would later play a crucial role in the main series. Viewers gain a deeper understanding of the characters' motivations and the friendships that form the foundation of their later struggles against the Titans. The animation quality in Since That Day is consistent with the main series, maintaining the detailed character designs and fluid action sequences. The visuals effectively capture the atmosphere of the walled city and the surrounding landscapes. While not as action-packed as the main series, the animation remains engaging and visually appealing. Given its status as an OVA, Since That Day has a more relaxed pace compared to the main series. The focus on character interactions and the exploration of the training exercise provides a different tone, allowing viewers to appreciate the characters in a more lighthearted context. The pacing may feel slow for those expecting the intense action of the main storyline, but it serves its purpose in providing character background. While Since That Day doesn't contribute major plot developments to the main series, it enriches the viewer's understanding of the characters and their pre-Titan lives. It serves as a supplementary piece that fans of the series may appreciate for the additional context it provides. The OVA enhances the emotional impact of certain moments in the main series by offering a nostalgic look at the characters' pasts. Shingeki no Kyojin: Since That Day is a worthwhile watch for fans of the series who are interested in delving deeper into the backgrounds of Eren, Mikasa, and Armin. While not essential to the main storyline, it adds emotional depth to the characters and showcases the sense of normalcy that existed before the Titans changed their world. The OVA serves as a charming and nostalgic glimpse into the lives of these characters before the harrowing events that define the Shingeki no Kyojin series.
