If you liked the Argento Soma anime, the Anime-Planet community thinks you'd like:
"Are you there?" This is the question that the aliens always demand before they attack. The quiet island of Tatsumiyajima is secretly the last line of defense against mysterious invaders. In a quiet and rustic villiage, children were raised without any knowlege that they were born to pilot the Fafnirs, giant robotic war machines of terrible powers that are the only thing that can defend all they hold dear. These children's struggles will be the only thing that can hold off an enemy that attacks both our bodies and our sense of identity...
Both series sport similar character designs as well as a penchant for running the cast through the emotional wringer. The subject matter for Soukyuu no Fafner and Argento Soma is a serious look on the nature of humanity viewed through the eyes of both the military and the civilian sectors.
A little bit of Mecha action doesn't hurt the mix either.
In the future, humanity has extended its reach into space; and to help future generations adapt to the new environment, special children are genetically engineered and trained. But when the alien Wulgaru army invades the solar system, mankind is forced to use these evolved youngsters as soldiers on the battlefront. Izuru, Toshikazu, Tamaki, Kei and Ataru are a group of such soldiers who, due to their consistently terrible grades and bumbling maneuvers, are referred to as the “Failure 5”. That is, until they’re called upon by the Global Defense Force to pilot special mecha to combat the threat. Now, can the gang grow as a team and protect the human race against such a fierce foe?
In 2031, ancient relics were found that proved the existence of an alien race, and they bore a chilling message: mankind will eventually be fated to fight the Hadeans, and their loss would mean the destruction of humanity. Now, twenty years later, man lives side by side with mutated creatures that spawned from the waters where the relics were discovered. The Neo International Defense Force (N.I.D.F.) was formed to protect the planet from any threats that may occur as a result. Chief scientist Yuno Rukina has been sent to find the Book of the Dead. But upon finding it, vast swarms of insects and large monsters appear around the globe; the Hadeans have finally arrived. As members of the N.I.D.F. try to contain the threat, Aiba Shu is mortally wounded; to save him from death, Yuno plunges the Book of the Dead into his chest, transforming into the Necrodiver – the messenger of humanity. Armed with integrated weapons and assisted by powerful guardians, Aiba must defend the planet against the Hadeans and keep his revenge against the human who betrayed her own race.
this anime is defienently something for you if you liked the other. They might seem a bit different at the begining, not to mention the differnce in production year. But as you get into the show, the similarity of these will begin to show.
The only difference there is is probably the superpower vs. the mecha thing. otherwise these will fit perfectly.
but since i don't want to spoil anything i can only say that if you love the whole "vengeance-theme" as well as the "love-theme" in one of these, then the other will certainly hit spot on.
So i higly recomend these.
In the future, a devastating event known as Second Impact has destroyed Tokyo as we know it, giving rise to Tokyo III - a city under siege by mysterious lifeforms known only as Angels. Mankind's only line of defense are the Evangelions, a set man-made machines piloted by a trio of fourteen year-old teenagers, Rei, Shinji, and Asuka. The fate of Japan and the entire world now lie with these three children, though they might not have the power to save the most important thing of all: each other.
Giant mech, seemingly mentally unprepared pilots, awesome fight scenes and a good look at human emotions piece together both of these series.
Argento Soma is probably a little more cohesive, with an easier to understand ending. But NGE stands alone as an epic and intense series, the first of its psychological kind.
If you love the excitement of NGE, you're bound to enjoy the same thing in Argento Soma.
