In the year 2016, a catastrophic incident at the Odaiba nuclear power plant contaminated the city with radiation and turned Tokyo into a ghost town devoid of life. 20 years later, Japan still struggles with the environmental consequences of that fateful day, and actively looks for survivors using Coppelions: genetically-engineered, radiation-resistant girls who scour the streets when SOS calls occur. With military support and funding to back them up, these young ladies continue to explore Tokyo and discover just who, and what, managed to survive.
School uniform-wearing girls in a post apocalyptic world. Both have pretty artwork. The similarities don't stop there, but note that Coppelion seems a bit darker than Arata-naru Sekai.
Despite some differences in tone, both Arata-naru Sekai and Coppelion are essentially about schoolgirls exploring a post-apocalyptic world. If you liked one, you'd probably also enjoy the other.
Nagamine is a young high school student who lives a fairly typical teenage life: hanging out with friends, attending class, and falling in love with a wonderful boy. But when she enlists in the galactic army, who is desperate for candidates to fight an alien war, she finds herself drifting farther away from her first love, Noboru. In the depths of space, where a simple email takes eight years to be delivered, will their love truly flourish, or simply fade away?
Both ova's are a short story about what the future is like for a group of girls sent far away to fight for Earth in their own ways. A cell phone connects both of the main girls from each ova to their past lives as well as their romantic feelings for a boy. I'm positive fans of either will love the other.
Princess Patema lives in an underground world, but one day tumbles headlong into a void and out into the wide open world above the surface. Age is a student on this surface world when he spies Patema hanging upside-down from a tree. He pulls her down to safety, struggling to keep her earthbound. Together they master the art of navigating competeing gravitational forces and set out to discover the secret that keeps their worlds apart.
One thousand years from now, humanity live pastoral lives aided by psychokinetic powers and the subservient Monster Rats. Saki Watanabe has just come of age, and her power has been reined in through meditation and hypnosis. She joins the Unified Class, where she will learn about her power and the world around her; yet so much of the truth is kept hidden. Her friends Shun, Mamoru, Satoru, and Maria share in her curiosity, and decide to go out of their way to seek the truth. But will the secrets of the past and present turn out to be things that Saki really wants to know?
If you enjoyed Arata-naru Sekai, I'd recommend giving Shin Sekai Yori a try next. SSY contains more complex/mature themes, but is still a variation on the "exploring the truth of a post-apocalyptic world." Both shows give you a strong sense that the characters are operating with only partial knowledge of their history.
The eccentric mad scientist Okabe, his childhood friend Mayuri, and the otaku hacker Daru have banded together to form the Future Gadget Research Laboratory, and spend their days in a ramshackle laboratory hanging out and occasionally attempting to invent incredible, yet generally useless, futuristic gadgets. However, their claymore is a hydrator and their hair dryer flips breakers, and the only invention that’s even remotely interesting is their Phone Microwave, which transforms bananas into oozing green gel. But when an experiment goes awry the gang discovers that the Phone Microwave can also send text messages to the past. And what's more, the words they send can affect the flow of time and have unforeseen, far-reaching consequences...
