Imagine a world devastated by nuclear war, where the strong oppress the weak and strength is the one thing that will ensure survival. A world where even close friends can betray you for power, a lesson that Ken, the Fist of The North Star, learns when he is nearly killed by his closest friend and left for dead. He's not an easy man to get rid of, and he returns - very angry.
I believe I heard "Omae wa mo shindeiru" (You are already dead) in Apocalypse Zero the other day. Joking aside, aside from the fact that there are battle suits involved in AZ, the similarities are pretty much striking. Post apocalyptic world and martial arts with sure kill techniques that are used, both main characters protect what little is left of honor and justice.
If you like Kakugo no Susume you might like Hokuto no Ken (and vice versa) because both of them deal with the same type of problem. It's a post apocalyptic world where violence rules. The only difference is that in Hokuto no Ken the enemies are humans, while in Kakugo no Susume they are mutants.
In the distant future, man has advanced into space and spread to worlds throughout the galaxy. On one such planet, Jerra, a brutal war began between the Jerran army and the Nexram - those who opposed a galactic Earth government. To combat the threat the Jerran army created the MDS - Most Dangerous Soldiers - who possess elite fighting abilities. However, one such soldier, MD Geist, was deemed too ferocious and imprisoned inside an orbiting satellite. Now, in the present, both sides have been decimated and the planet lies in ruins. After his satellite falls to the planet, MD Geist wanders the wasteland once more. And after killing the leader of a powerful gang, Geist finds himself in the company of a woman named Vaiya. Together, the two join with survivors of the Jerran army and set forth on a quest to exterminate Death Force - a doomsday device built by the Jerrans - before it activates.
Badass. Both of these cheesy, so bad it's balls out awesome OVAs are filled to the brim with moments that transend what humans can do. They have a high focus on blood, gibs and enough manly action to make you change the channel from flaming chainsaw bear boxing to either one of these, complete with rock your ass from the seat music that only adds to the manly experience. Prepare to shave your newly grown chest hair as these represent what 80s (Well, 90s for Apocalypse Zero but it fits in with the 80s mentality) anime with bad dubs are all about: Manly men, manly action, nudity, blood, explosions and tons of badass feats.
These are the both typical kind of anime that got English dubs in the early 80s or 90s. They're hyper violence stories with little or no plot. Just lots of blood, gore, sex and boobs. These are both anime that jump from one violence scene to the next with only the thinnest story to connect it all together.
MD Geist is probably the more enjoyable of the two with its cheesy 80s action movie sensibility, whereas Apocalypse Zero can be a lot more mean spirited and bizarre at times. However, these are both anime that thrive on the action scenes and fall flat on their faces when they try to do anything else. Also, MD Geist has a great soundtrack which helps to make the sometimes repetitive action scenes more enjoyable.
If you're looking for a mindless violent anime and don't care about plot or anything else then try these titles.
Shou Fukamachi is just an average high school student, until one afternoon, Sho and his friend Tetsuro stumble upon what looks to be a landmine, which Sho accidentally activates. Instead of attacking and killing him, it grants him control of the Guyver, a powerful biological armor, which the evil corporation Chronos wants to take at any cost, even if it means killing Shou and his friends.
At their simplest, Guyver and Apocalypse Zero are anime about a guy in a living power suit that fights monsters and opposes an evil organization.
Guyver does away with the over the top gore of apocalypse zero and instead comes up with more story and character development. Regardless, if you enjoyed the battles in Apocalypse Zero, you are sure to enjoy Guyver.
Throughout the galaxy, two villains destroy and pillage anything in their path. Their names are Cross and Chaos, and they are ready to invade their next target: Earth. The only defense against these warriors are the Iczelions, a fusion of young girls, and Iczels, sentient body armor. Nagisa is a typical high school girl who is about to become the next Iczelion against her will, to defend the planet and save the human race! But not if she has anything to say about it...
Both anime have both bad guys being either a strange brother and sister combo (Iczer) or a very angry sister of the hero (Apocalypse Zero) that want nothing more than to beat the crap out of the good people that stand in the way of their goals. Apocalypse Zero has much more gore and shock value to their scenes than Iczer but both have similar story pacing and confusing characters. If you liked one check out the other.
In the near future, The City of Tomorrow is being devoured by the violence bred in its hellish slums. When the Central Guard Company is hired to clean-up the slums, two scientists compete to find an effective solution. One favors a non-violent method utilizing her psychic-powered Guard Suit. When John Stalker is sent to test the prototype suit, the other sees the perfect opportunity to test his Genocyber Killing Machine and eliminate a romantic rival! But neither scientist could have predicted the dark secret lurking within John Stalker...
Both anime have a "suit of armor" that takes over whoever wears it. Depending on how willed the person is they can control it or be controlled by the suit. Crazy action, violence, and weird characters a plenty. Both take place in worlds where mankind isn't doing so well and struggling to survive. If you liked one i highly suggest you check out the other.
