Also, I recommend the rest of the Clannad series (in the scenario that you've already watched Angel Beats!). If you're going to watch the movie, watch the first Clannad anime season first to get the story the best. Both are very touching/moving series while being heart-warming and playful at the same time.

Bleach

Bleach

Fifteen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki is a typical teen with fighting skills, two caring sisters and a special trait: he can see ghosts. However, when Ichigo and his family find themselves under attack by a huge beast, Ichigo discovers that there’s more to the supernatural world than the everyday specter. Vengeful spirits known as Hollows roam the world in search of devouring souls, and Shinigami – soul reapers – work tirelessly to defeat them and guide normal ghosts into a place called Soul Society. Ichigo valiantly fights the Hollow that threatens his sisters, but on the verge of defeat a Shinigami named Rukia gives him her powers, turning him into a Shinigami himself. Ichigo must now adjust to his new life of both vanquishing and saving souls for the sake of Soul Society.

Both deal with the other side, spirits, your resolve.

They both also have supporting characters that know way more than the main character does.

Danganronpa Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation

Hope’s Peak Private Academy is a super-exclusive institute that gathers the best and the brightest, provides them with a world-class education, and propels them into any career they wish. At least, that’s what the average student Naegi used to think. Having been accepted into a class of 15 students through a lottery system, the boy quickly comes to learn that Hope’s Peak is no ordinary school. In reality, he and the group find themselves trapped inside and learn that the only way to "graduate" is to murder a fellow student and fool everyone in a trial that determines life or death! Led by the whimsically-cruel, teddy-bear-like Monobear, Naegi and the others must do whatever it takes to escape this bizarre, deadly game.

While there may at first seem a huge discrepancy between these two titles, the two actually share some pretty common ground.

Both series focus upon a group of high schoolers trapped within an atypical high school and their subsequent efforts to uncover an unidentified oppressor as they try to understand their bizarre circumstances. Furthermore, both series similarly include a large cast of distinctly (and perhaps exaggeratedly) eccentric characters who inject comedy into an otherwise dire situation.

While approached in different ways, both series feature a focus upon life and death, and with their similarities in setting and character project a similar tone. If you're a fan of one series you may well like the other.

Fairy Tail

Fairy Tail

Lucy is a seventeen-year-old mage with the power to summon stellar spirits, but what she really wants to do is join a guild - and not just any guild. She has her eyes set on Fairy Tail, a notoriously reckless and outrageous group of magic users who are likely to be drunk or destroying buildings and towns in the process of completing a job! While in town one day Lucy meets a perpetually-seasick boy named Natsu who, through a series of events, reveals to her that he's none other than the fire-eating mage Salamander of Fairy Tail! Lucy is finally able to join Fairy Tail and quickly begins to take on odd jobs with Natsu and his gang for fame and profit. Along with her fiery friend, Happy the flying cat, Natsu's archrival Gray and their overseer the invincible and beautiful Erza, Lucy sets forth for epic adventures that leave an epic amount of destruction in their wake. After all, destroying a city or five doesn't matter as long as they get the job done... right?!

Sword Art Online

Sword Art Online

The year is 2022, and gamers have lined up on launch day for Sword Art Online, a hotly-anticipated MMORPG that lets players connect to an immersive virtual reality world with special helmets called Nerve Gear. Kirito is one such gamer who's eager to jump back into action, having spent a great deal of time as a beta tester, and quickly becomes friends with newbie warrior Klein. But soon, Sword Art Online's 10,000 players discover that not only are they unable to log out, the only way they can return to their physical bodies is by beating the 100-level tower's final boss - that is, if their HP doesn't drop to zero first, for death in the game means death in the real world. Now, with no one else to turn to, Kirito and the other participants must survive the game as best they can – some forming guilds, others ruthlessly leaving their peers behind, and many tragically falling by the wayside or to the merciless monsters populating the lands...

The fact that characters are stuck in a game-like world which has a specific set of rules made me think of Sword Art Online when watching Angel Beats!. While those two series are not exactly similar, I believe that this feel is enough to justify a recommendation.

Additionally I would like to add that both series sport a competent male lead (I'm not sure if this is the right word to describe them). Simply put if you liked the male lead in one series, you shouldn't be disappointed with the other series.
