When the infected approached Rei and Takashi's school, it led to a gruesome blood bath that left the majority of students and staff dead or turned into the zombie-like monsters that have spread throughout the world. Together with a handful of other survivors, Rei and Takashi set forth to find their families in a world that is rapidly detoriating. Governments have collapsed, the killer disease is out of control, and people everywhere are trying their best to simply live through each day...
Angel Beats is very reminicent of Highschool of the Dead in terms of an extra-ordinary highschool, focused on a small group of students working to stay "alive" (through the use of planning and assult).
The warm feeling you get from the friendships formed in a world of chaos is very similar in both, as well as the beautiful art either studio has to offer.
In a high school setting, there are many people whose stories must be told: Hiro, an aspiring manga artist whose view of the world is "missing a certain color," according to himself; his childhood friend Kei, who is vying for his attention; Kyosuke, a photographer and cameraman who seeks to capture true emotion in his work; the ever-cheerful Miyako, who meets Hiro by chance and immediately becomes attached to him; the gentle Renji, unsure of his aspirations to become a novelist; and Kei's mysterious and quiet sister Chihiro, who seems to be a different person every day. As time passes and they interact with one another more, their paths increasingly intertwine as shades of regrettable pasts emerge.
Both animes have eye popping beautiful animation with bright colors. For some reason Ef- Tale of Memories reminded me a little bit of Angel Beats! Even though the storylines aren't actually the same, I still recommend any one who likes Angel Beats to watch Ef because they both have beautiful stories that will tug at your heart strings.
It is a time of peace between the Earth and the Moon, in the aftermath of the great war between them. On Earth, young Asagiri Tatsuya is amazed to learn that his home is to have a Lunar exchange student, for a homestay guest. Even more amazingly, his guest is none other than the Princess of the Lunar Sphere Kingdom, Feena Fam Earthlight. As Tatsuya struggles to deal with the ramifications of this, and as tensions rise between Earth and Moon, he also learns that there is more to this homestay than meets the eye, and that he and Feena have a shared destiny...
In the remote Southern Cross island, a secret organization named The Glittering Crux plans to reactivate giant mobile suits that have been sealed for ages. Known as cybodies, they can only be controlled by pilots identified as star drivers. To unleash their full power, the mysterious group must brake the seals of the four shrine maidens that reside in the isle. Recently arrived outsider Takuto Tsunashi vows to stop the Glittering Crux in order to protect Wako Agemaki, girl who saved his life and is one of the four maidens. Wako is a lively young lady who has already been betrothed to Sugata Shindou, a rich and talented childhood friend. Despite being very close to Agemaki, Sugata quietly disapproves this engagement since it was forced on to them due to a family tradition. The melancholic couple becomes a radiant trio as Takuto becomes not only their friend, but protector of the seals since he is none other than the Galactic Pretty Boy, gifted star driver of Tauburn, the 22nd cybody.
This is kiiind of a stretch, but I think these two series make a good pair. They're both centered around a group of high schoolers in a crazy, supernatural situation, and switch between comedy, romantic drama and crazy fights. I think Angel Beats is a bit less obtuse than Star Driver--Star Driver probably needs to be watched more than once to really get it--but they still both have a similar "feel" while you're watching them. It's worth giving one a try if you liked the other!
