Both these series are based on books written by L.M. Montgomery. Because of this the two's setting and feeling are very much alike which ensures you'll love the other if you loved one of these series already.

Based on stories by the same author taking place on Prince Edward Island, they feature orphaned girls with vivid imaginations moving to a classic country environment.

Both are coming of age stories. Although I adore Emily Of New Moon more than Anne (because they did it in a more complete way) I stilll believe that fans should check out both.

Both Anne and Pollyanna are outspoken girls who live in the late 1800's. They also both move to a new home with a stubborn woman as a new parent-figure which gradually grows to love the talkative girls.

Can we ever get tired of stories about precocious, optimistic oprphans? Apparently not, because there's a ton of them. These two children's classics are timeless and don't disappoint.

Both Akage no Anne and Candy Candy are calm stories about the life of a poor county girl who is finding her place in life. I think Candy and Anne are both sweet and kind girls with a big heart capable of doing good thing for others and to love. Neither of them understands why there are people who are bad and both believe that everyone has his good side. The drawing style is very alike and the times the stories take place in are also alike.

This anime shares a coming of age story as well. Watching a story of a unique girl and her triumphs of growing up is something both of these anime share. Anyone who like Akage no Anne would definitely like My Daddy Long Legs.

Art

Both have absolutely beautiful animation. Both were made in the 70s so that both have the same pretty hand drawn animation style of the 70s/80s/90s. Though “Akage no Anne”’s animation is more focused on it’s realistic background, while “Ie Naki Ko” animation is focused on its moving parts and different angles.

Story

Although the path the protagonists take are very different both stories focus are coming of age/bildungsroman stories about orphans. Both main characters also have similar personalities; they are very kindhearted, have big imaginations, are very talented, and likable. However their talents differ with “Akage No Anne”’s protagonist talented in her studies/acting while “Ie Naki Ko”’s protagonist is talented in music. Additionally both anime are based on books (Anne of Green Gables and Nobody’s Boy) set in historical time periods. “Akage No Anne” set in rural Canada where “Ie Naki Ko” is set all over France.
