In a time of great heroes, the evil Sephiroth and the power of Meteor were vanquished by a warrior named Cloud Strife and his companions. This is a weird recommendation, but both have older male characters that want to protect younger children. There is a girl in both of these who needs the help of the male character.

FLCL

FLCL

Naota Nanbada is a boring young boy who leads a boring life in a boring town. His older brother has left for America, and the closest he comes to any excitement is when his deadbeat dad has too much sake. But things change one day when a bizarre girl zooms up to him on a scooter and smacks him in the face with her guitar. What's more, once Naoto returns home he discovers that this strange woman has arrived ahead of him and moved in! Not only does she constantly engage in perverted activities with Naota's father and flirt with the young man himself, but she also claims to be an alien who is searching for the ‘Pirate King.' Now, Naota must learn to live with this new intruder, deal with an odd government agent who sports exceptionally large eyebrows and the mysterious Medical Mechanica, and come to terms with the fact that there are a variety of robots and weapons emerging out of his head - amongst other things. Perhaps boring wasn't so bad after all...

Air TV and FLCL are very similar in some respects but very different in others as well. The animation is extremely well done in both series and both have a laid back, almost dreamy atmosphere. While FLCL is undoubtably a more high energy anime than AIR, I think that others will agree the character interactions and deep, sometimes strange, moral situations are similar in both these series.

Full Moon wo Sagashite

Full Moon wo Sagashite

Twelve year old Mitsuki's desire is to become a singer. She has the talent and a beautiful voice, but she also has a throat tumor which threatens to rob her of her gift of song. As if things weren't bad enough, two shinigami inform Mitsuki that she only has one year left to live. However, all is not lost, for they make a deal that if she goes with them, they will help realize her dream by changing her into a healthy 16-year-old, who is able to sing and apply for auditions.

In Air and Full Moon each series focus on a girl facing death and the way she copes with it. Although visually they can\'t be compaired, they are a bit similar and both very emotional.

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora

Yuichi is a teenage boy who was diagnosed with hepatitis; and as staying at the hospital is boring, he often sneaks out at night to hang out with his friends. However, each time he is caught by the slightly sadistic nurse Akiko, he just prolongs his stay at the hospital. After his most recent escape, instead of striking a punch or kick at Yuichi, Akiko says that she'll overlook his sneak outs if he becomes friends with 17-year-old Rika, another hospital resident. Rika doesn't open up to him at first, but she has her reasons: she has a weak heart; and though she may come off as selfish and rude, Yuichi looks beyond the surface to help both of them enjoy what life has to offer.

both of these revolve around life and death in a cute and sad way, but in the end the characters don't regret that they have to face such hardships because it is all the part of what we call life. Both made me shed a tear after the last episode

Honey and Clover

Honey and Clover

Art college: cradle of romance, home of bittersweet moments. Takemoto is struggling to find his direction in life, while his roommates Morita and Mayama are moving confidently - or recklessly - towards their goals. Enter Hagu-chan, the childlike and beautiful prodigy whom everyone admires; and thus the love triangles begin. Together, the trio explore the pain of first love, the trials of romantic conflict, and our loyalty to those annoying people who happen to be our closest friends.

The funny times, the sad times, the happy times, the angry times; these series go though them all. You go along with the characters in both Air and Honey and Clover in their search. Whether it be for a girl with wings or the reason to paint, you're right there with them.
