They're both gory anime that can turn the stomach, of course, but there's more to it than that. The art style is similar in their use of colours and contrast. If you like one, you'll probably like the other.
In the wake of a rebellion that shook Japan twenty years prior, Togame Hida, general director and strategist for the army, seeks to obtain the 12 "deviant blades" created by master swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki to help add stability and security to the Bakufu government. To aid in this endeavor, she looks to enlist the help of Yasuri Mutsune, head of the Kyotou-ryu school and hero of the rebellion. But when she arrives on the island where he lives in exile, she finds him dead, succeeded by his skilled yet slightly daft son Shichika. Undeterred, the two set off from the island in search of the swords armed only with Togami's sharp strategic mind and Shichika's powerful, swordless Kyotou-ryu.
In the distant future, man has advanced into space and spread to worlds throughout the galaxy. On one such planet, Jerra, a brutal war began between the Jerran army and the Nexram - those who opposed a galactic Earth government. To combat the threat the Jerran army created the MDS - Most Dangerous Soldiers - who possess elite fighting abilities. However, one such soldier, MD Geist, was deemed too ferocious and imprisoned inside an orbiting satellite. Now, in the present, both sides have been decimated and the planet lies in ruins. After his satellite falls to the planet, MD Geist wanders the wasteland once more. And after killing the leader of a powerful gang, Geist finds himself in the company of a woman named Vaiya. Together, the two join with survivors of the Jerran army and set forth on a quest to exterminate Death Force - a doomsday device built by the Jerrans - before it activates.
Violent anti-hero protagonists lead a crusade to spill as much blood as possible. Fanservice and gore abound while plot is a distant after thought. Tune in for the visercal thrills of the spectacle and turn your brain off for a bit.
Settings are different. Afro Samurai is all about the swords with very few guns. Whereas Geist is more about guns with very little melee combat.
